As much as I am a keen "Aquarist", I am also a keen angler and 90% of the fun in angling is the curious expectation of "what fish will I catch next".... I always return them all to the water after fishing.

The problem is however, that we have limited resources with basically 4 types of fish that are likely to be caught. Now, my thinking is that if we could stock our rivers and dams with Koi fish, there will be this added excitement to the angling sport.... every-one that you catch will be different in coulor and markings and since they share the same requirements of the common carp that we catch in abundance, they will not threaten the habitat of the latter.

Actually, in afterthought.... I think Oscars will give you a fight for your troubles..... The'll make excellent angling fish as well?

hmm i'm not really for koi on angling  and for the most part they're (almost) always at the surface with their mouths open. its more of hooking up the kois than really fishing

Introducing foreign species to native waterways etc has resulted in plenty of ecological disasters so far... for that reason it's usually illegal. And even if you weren't breaking the law, you only need to do a bit of research to realise that many, many people have made this mistake - usually for sport, or to predate on a 'problem' creature etc - only to find that the introduced species has caused much more of a headache than they originally anticipated.

Just because Koi have the same requirements as common carp doesn't mean it's ok to start plopping them in the river. You have to consider so many other factors - for example how long the fish takes to reach maturity, average number of drops & fry in each, temperature, food, likelihood of survival, immunity / susceptibility to disease etc. It's pretty much impossible to anticipate the impact of an introduced species on a local habitat in advance.

And I don't know about you, but fishing for koi would always make me feel just a teensy bit like a garden gnome!

I was watching the saturday morning fishing shows and these people were catching Tiger Oscars apparently they are like bass in the fishing world. cant remember where they were but the Oscars were deffinatly the regular kept speciese and had nice bright red to them.

does this mean you will eat them after you catch them?

I dont condone just fishing for sport, yes you go fishing and get a fish thats under the legal limit...you put it back, but just to go trawling for koi for fun, not cool.

^ Florida. They are in ALL the water ways, its crazy. I see nothing wrong with adding Koi, its just a carp bred for a certain color right? But here are a few things:
1. If you were to add them, you would have to make sure they were ABSOLUTELY DISEASE FREE. Because if they arent, the other fish will get it
2. If you added them, they probably wont make it , as there colors stand out to much, and they will get eaten.
3. I've been to a Japaneese place, and they had ponds full of Koi and other native fish and there was no ill side effects. So if you can make sure they are disease free, i so, GO AHEAD.

I cannot believe what some of you are saying about a very stupid mistake. You seem to think that this is a good idea... WRONG!!!
Yes they are part of the carp family but that dosnt mean you should be putting them into you streams and lakes. Carp have ruined many rivers and lake so far and its starting to get out of control. sometimes they even have to poison lake to get rid of them killing other native species, also if you add koi you may be adding fish but you could be killing many other species! Many species of carp have been brought over from asia and put into our lakes and streams. Believe me I would rather catch a bass or cutthroat then a lowsey colorful carp. Fish and Game would probably put up regulations for even if you catch a koi you need to kill it. A story similiar to this is about the snakehead species which have be demolitioning native wild species and destroying lakes, rivers, and streams. I for one can say that this is a very poor decision and if you had proper respect for the sport you won't even continue thinking about it.

NOTE: I would only agree with adding them if it didnt harm the enviroment. And i would think snakeheads are way more destructive than koi.

Completely agreed with Bloated, these are horrible advice I ever saw. Koi will always carrying diseases, no matter if they are disease-free as the koi may be immune to it but not native fishes as you have heard of VHS. Dumping the exotic species into the native waterways is illegal and you will get huge fine. I've been working with DNR. Trust me, they don't wany any exotics in their waterways, especially the carp species. Why you want to add more million of $ for the koi & carp damages in the United States. Carp are already in 50 states, even in Alaska and Hawaii. And the DNR is struggling to control any carp species.

Actually koi are much destructive as they will ruin quality of water and rooting up the muck cause the lakes went to "bad" as it will resulted into algae build up, kill some oxygen in the water. And the carp are known to eat other fishes' eggs and fry. Many threatened species are in trouble because of carp than the snakehead.

I don't completely agree with your advice, Krib.

If you're all so finickey about the Koi then, Hows about the Oscar suggestion.... At least they'll contribute to keeping the carp "explossion" in control??

Put oscars in the waterway, won't keeping carp explossion in control. The carp have been here for 100 years in the United States.

You don't read all of my advice. Dumping any exotic species in the waterway is illegal. That's mean for oscar too. Oscar cause problems in Florida by replace native sunfish and other natives. What is your point about suggest an exotic fish in your waterways? There are native fishes that are very fun to catch.

I too think native fish are fun to catch. Oscars are al over the place in Florida. Its crazy. I highly doubt there depleting the native sunfish stocks, as i've seen so many sun fish in florida that you wouldnt know what to do with. I went to a fishing area in florida one time to check it out, and there was a sign for catching limits. And it said :

Sun fish
No limit

So, if they arent putting a limit, then how are they harming them, but im sure the oscars arent doing the other predators any good as Oscars eat their weight.

...... But it's so boring catching the same type of fish over and over... They all look alike, only size differs. and even if it's illegal,.... Who'll know that I'm the guilty party that stocked the exotics.... I'm sure all other anglers will be pleased.

Not sure about anyone else but I wouldn't like to release a fish for other people to catch that are worth so much money, considering that some 'anglers' wouldn't care for the fish properly. Plus due to what they are worth alot of people would hook kois and take them home/sell them.

So if you can make sure they are disease free, i so, GO AHEAD.

Easier said than done.

If you're all so finickey about the Koi then, Hows about the Oscar suggestion

How about you just leave fish where they are supposed to be and not introduce new species into the wild, it's just not gonna work. It's not as simple as you think.
