Im afraid your happiness will be short lived unless you have those knight gobies in a brackish tank, they are a brackish species and do not live for long in a freshwater aquarium. I first kept this attractive species of gobie around 5 years ago and before i found out about their high salt requirements lost many after just a few months to mysterious diseases that would kill them over night. I have since kept them in a light brackish tank using 2 tablespoons of salt for each 10 US gallons (40 litres) of water where they did much better and even bred for me although i could not successfully raise the fry.

i read that knight gobies are often kept in fresh water tanks...hmm...and i know that they were not kept in brackish tanks in the lfs in which i purchased them. i did also read that they are kept in brackish tanks but if i didnt purchase them from one wouldnt that maybe mean they were already acclimatized to that type of water? hrm, quite a conundrum. any other input?

ps. i totally love my knight gobies, they are amazing!

I wanna c sum pix asap! :D

Fish stores selling juvenile brackish fish in FW tanks is alarmingly common and it is a rare shop owner/worker that actually warns the customer that the fish that the fish they are purchasing will need to have salt added to the water.

Its up to you but my advise would be to start bringing the salt level in their tank up by 1 teaspoon per 10 US gallons a week until you have 2 tablespoons per 10g.

thanks...hmm i'm not sure if mine are juvenile of not, they are pretty big....and i noticed a bit of a poking up scale on the top of one of their heads. is this normal? i had a f ish with dropsy before and it doesnt look like that to me.

they are such beautiful fish, and have such a neat way of swimming around and doing what they do, i will get some pics of them up soon! not to mention the rest of my fishies.....i gotta get off my hiney and get them developed! hehe

thanks for the info.

I just bought 3 knight gobies today. I have had f8 and spotted puffers for a year and a half in my 35g brackish tank and a month ago added two mono sabaes and two of the other monos the ones with the yellow fins, sorry can't recall what they are called, and also 1 archer fish. My tank is kept around 1.014 and they all seem to love it. But we will see if the gobies do. They sure ate well after only being in the tank for 5 minutes. Oh and I only acclumate my fish by adding some tank water to them over a period of 20 minutes and they all did fine so I assume the gobies will too. Unfortunitely I can't keep live plants though I had to go with fake ones. The Java's just don't last. Anyway I was just curious to any responses as most people always say brackish should be 1.005 but the manager at one of my LFS said I could go up to 1.018 and they'd all be fine. And also if you read the back of therapeutic salt for freshwater fish I believe it says to go to 1.005, and thats freshwater. Anyway just wondering and wanted to throw that out there.

Wow I just noticed the last posting was in 2004. Geez I wonder if anyone will reply to mine. LOL

I certainly wouldnt take knight gobies and F8 puffers past 1.008 SG and depending on which species the archer fish is it may not enjoy levels over that for the long term either but the monos will happilly take anything up to full seawater.

Did the shop inform you that the sebae monos grow to be around 12 inches tall and the yellow finned monos (Monodactylus argentius) to about 8 inches, that 35 gallon tank will need upgrading to at least 75 gallons if you intend to keep them as adults.

OK thanks. I am aware that the monos grow that big and I already have a 55g tank I am planning on upgrading to and it will have to do, but by the time they get that big maybe I'll be able to afford a new tank. I already have enough filtration for a 75g tank so it won't be so expensive of an upgrade. I have an empty 10g tank if the gobies and puffers start acting weird and going funny colors then I will put them in there at a lower salt level. As for now they are going to stay where they are. As I said my puffers have been at that SG for over a year and are doing great. Thanks again for your reply and if I figure out how to put pics on here I will post one.
