Hello!

My sister and her boyfriend found this fish in a store, and they wanted it, so hey got it. Got it home, and decided they no longer wanted it. So, being that I have a empty fish tank and a son who loves to watch fish, I took the little guy home. I got a water conditioner and stuff and (s)he is now swimming happily in its new home. This is I have no clue what it is, or how to take care of it. I have tried looking up mini puffer fish and all I get is about puffers in the wild. I have a small (like 5 sec worth) video of it, cuz all the photos I tried to take were to blurry. So here it is:

Fish

(s)he is really cute, and I want it to live out its little life happily. I'm just not sure how to help it :(

Laura

That's a brackish puffer. It will need marine salt in the aquarium later on. I'd suggest going to www.####

Okay, since I can't post a direct link, I will edit it.

It's

Hi Laura, I think whatever fish it turned in to being, the reality is you would have felt over your head. I bought a bunch of fish in a tank and thought it would be easy -no way - but it is very enjoyable. You have ended up with a gorgeous fish and with a little time you'll get it right. This forum is amazing for information and help - Just keep asking questions no matter how stupid and people will answer them freely.

I wanted a puffer but they arent really good with other fish so I chose not to get one in the end. Also you'll need to feed them other food than flake and you'll have to sort your water out. Just go step by step and you'll get there.
The little guy will actually recognise you and puffers can get their very own personallity.
I'm still a newbie like yourself so I wont make any suggestions except to start treading about especially the pinned articles and common newbie mistakes etc.

If you tell people your tank stats that will help - IE: How many litres/gallons and what your Ammonia and Nitrate levels are etc, if you don't know that then fair enough... start there.

PS: he's gorgeous

Well, I have him in a 2 gal tank right now. I was flamed for it in the puffer place, but in a catch that is all I had. I am working on getting him a 10 gal tank. I dont know the water levels, I will be going tonight to get the little test kits and a plant for him. I did just change out 50% of his water because I was told it is a high waste producer. I am gonna keep on changing out the water everyday till I can get the tank (sunday prob) I also have a little heater fan pointed at the tank and it is keeping the water warm (I am also going to get a little temp gage thingy)

But ummm yeah, lol. :) He seems to be happy, watches me when I go in the room.

For the difference in price you may as well get a 30 gal. tank. Trust me you will want a bigger one later ;)

well I am getting a 10 gal one for free, as a new tank is really not possiable in our budget this month. I will get a larger one later.

As mentioned it is a Green Spotted Puffer (Tetraodon Nigroviridis)

It will need High brackish to marine salinity, they are agressive to other tankmates, especially with age and will avidly hunt for food.
Max size about 6.5 inches (17cm) and if cared for properly should live easily to 10 years, if not 15

Diet should consist of Mollusks and crustaceans. Needs to be fed a regular diet of hard-shelled creatures to guard against beak overgrowth.

Care: Requires medium to high-end brackish water, and usually thrives in marine conditions. Introduce to a fully cycled aquarium, and raise the specific gravity by at least 0.002 per week, aiming for 1.015.

Minimum Tank Size: 30 US Gallons (115 liters)

Even if he is going to be the only fish, he needs at least a 30gal tank. Personally, I suggest that you take him back, brackish puffers are not good beginner fish. Also your tank is not cycled, you need to read this , this, and this. The puffer will most likely get sick or possibly die during the cycle. He would stand a much better chance in a 30gal tank, with daily water changes.

I cant take him back, I was not the one who got him, and I am not sure how long she had him before she gave him to me.

phone up, or pop into, any lfs (which is set up for brackish/marine) and explain what fish you have and ask if they would be willing to take it. If the lfs is set up for the fish they probably would be glad to take if you're not charging for it.

Or just ask her where she got it.
