i am cycling a 38gal. tank at the moment and i was thnking about some stocking options and i have decided i really like electric yellow and electric blue cichlids but i like rams better will they be ok together or will there be problems and i was also thinking about putting in swardtails with them. any ideas?

No, yellows, blues, rams and swordtails will not be OK together. Yellows and blues are African cichlids and require MUCH different water from rams. They are also more aggressive. While they are relatively peaceful for Mbuna, they shouldn't be considered community fish. They would probably eat the swordtails. You could do rams and swordtails, but in general, swordtails prefer harder water than rams.

try posting in African the cichlids forum :)

Missed the word Rams before , why not pass on the lake cichlids in that case , or you could pass on both , and try some Apistos , or kribs [ again African ]

I don't think mixing them would work out well though .

I really know very little about rift Vally lake cichlids , so if you post in the African cichlids forum some one who is regular there can better advise you .

swordtails could mix with more peaceful cichlids. Rams and swordtails would work but rams are very sensative to water condition. The swordtails are hardy though and will be capable to handle the water condition that the rams pefer. pH 6.5-7.0 78-84 degrees. That would be a very colorful tank! good luck :D

Although Kribs are african, they are from the rivers of the contenant, and much more suitable to a new world aquarium then a rift lake aquarium.

Water paramteters is always the first mention, but it's the least important aspect. Both these fish will live just fine in a wide range of parameters.

Mixing cichlids from Lake Malawi with new worlds or riverine specimens, or even Tanganyikan specimens is a bad idea because their behavior is black and white, and completely incompatible. The chances are it would be the rams that suffered most.
