Hi,

I had a pair of dwarfs but the female was attacked & died from her injuries by I THINK the male although i didnt see it but i know he can be aggresive & other tank mates didnt bother them.

I know they are better in pairs but was is the general feeling on adding another female in with an aggresive male - will it happen again? is it still best to give him a mate and hope he gets along with this one? - would two females help?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

i would just leave him by himself, but if you try i would say the more females the better.

What other fish are in the tank and what size tank is it?

If he's an aggressive male like you suspect, he is better off on his own like bluefire said.

Male dwarfs don't need companions. They are territorial and solitary.

Females are the ones that do better with company.

Also, some gouramies, particularly males, will be particularly aggressive. I have had one pearl gourami who would kill any other gouramies in his tank. All the other pearls I have kept are usualy very peaceful. With gouramies and related fish, a lot of their character comes down to the individual and what works with one won't work with another.

Thanks bluefire & sylvia for your reply's

In answer to ur question sylvia the tank is 40 uk gallons & house's some small tetra neon/red phantom, hatchet fish, platies & some bengal loach - its still understocked at the moment.

I think i would rather just leave him on his own then, I was worried this would be considered cruel but if he'd be ok on his own id rather do that that risk having another death on my hands :(
