Kick out the jams and rock the block

I've been wanting to start this thread for about a year now.
While I immensely enjoy @TwoTankAmin Weekend Musical Treat, as he has great taste in music, I present this as an alternative. I'm a generation younger so I present this as a different perspective with a more modern theme.
That said this first installment is two takes on a classic. Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix.
First up is a version by the South Austin Jug Band. Yes, Jimi covered by a bluegrass band. Mandolin, upright bass, two acoustic guitars amd a fiddle. It's kinda mellow amd breezy, but still rocks. If you like it check out some of their live performances on YouTube.



Next up is Little Wing as done by Monte Montgomery. If you've never seen a guy shred on an acoustic guitar, this is for you.
I'm not sure how we gets this tone out of an old acoustic that's been played hard. I'm sure he's using a delay chorus similar to what The Edge from U2 uses.

I've wanted to do something like this too, but more punk/ska/reggae/"ancient alternative" oriented. We had a member, maybe on this forum, who had a metal thread, but he was the only person who ever commented on it.

No freebird, stairway to heaven or dust on the wind, please...

As a teenager in the 80's all the alternative, subversive, underground stuff was right in my wheel house.
The only time I ever play Stairway is from the live Song Remains The Same recording at Madison Square Garden, because it a 9 minute jam where Page goes nuts.

I was a teenager in the later seventies, but I think the sixties ended around 1972. I got seriously into music in 1976, although I was glued to my transistor radio from the age of 12. Things got stale and then punk opened doors to people with bad commercial taste like me. For some reason I've been on a burn where I'm listening to a lot of Jamaican and 2 tone ska, as well as dub reggae again. I go through phases. Last month it was Iggy and the Stooges, Fontaines DC and Bach. Next week it could be Tom Waits, punk or sensitive singer songwriters. My music brain is fickle.

If you ask me to list my 10 favourite bands, the list will mutate into 50...it's like asking me my favourite fish.

This is a favorite of mine, The Urge from the STL. That's St. Louis, Missouri or is it misery?
Blending punk/metal/ska/reggae/hip hop, this band should have been way bigger.

Yeah , I remember him . Wonder where he went ? Anyway , there aren’t a lot of metal heads amongst the predominantly old timers here . I like “ some “ metal as it seems almost classical in a strange way but the stuff you listen to is as foreign as Tetra breeding to me . But to each his own .

I like the Urge so far... I didn't know them. Music to be explored - that always makes my day.

Metal? I find it is too technique based and hollow, to me. I know, what do I know? Music is very personal, and generational. What sounds good to one person involves culture, class, timing, and a host of intangible things. Research says it has a lot to do with what we were exposed to musically before about 16. For me, that was almost everything from African Highlife to Newfoundland folk. I was lucky. But we also get our backs up about eras - my generation were unimpressed with the sixties because we were constantly overtold how great they'd been. Many of us were looking for something different.

Doing what twotankamin does would be a lot of work though.
