My tank is about 35 gallons and 40" long. I currently have a pair of curviceps and a pair of keyholes in there, along with a few other fish.

I have just been wondering lately if I should not move the curviceps to another 2' tank I have as I am just not sure if the 40" is large enough or not for the 2 pairs together...

What do you reckon?

Both of those fish are fairly docile, but if one of the pairs do start to show spawning behavior, it would be a good idea to move them :)

Thats the thing... I currently got both spawning.... the curviceps have had 4 failed attempts and keep re-spawning every week.

My keyholes spawned for the first time last week, although unsuccessful.

I never really expected the keyholes to spawn (was never absolutely sure they were a pair).

Guess, it is best to move the curviceps.

Would an apistogramma species go ok with the keyholes in that tank, or would I have the same territorial issues?

Any spawning cichlids will become agressive towards similar fish (cichlids). Its better to avoid the problems and just stay with the keyholes in the one tank for now :)

How long have you them in this set up together ?

40" is a good size , those 2 pairs could work if they pick opposite sides of the tank to set up home .

The keyholes have been in there about 5 months and the curviceps about 3.

I am going to try tonight to creat a divide using wood and plants down the middle of tank, but if it seems that is not working to keep them apart I will move the curviceps.

I was really hoping to keep a pair of curviceps in the 2 foot tank, but will have to see how these guys do first.

Is there anyone else here who mixes their south american cichlids? If so, what fish and what size tanks?

How's this for mixing: Keyholes, Cockatoo Dwarfs, Angelfish and Biotodoma Cupido. they are in a 5 footer though. Add in a bunch of tetra and you have the mother of all spawning unfriendly tanks. they, of course, the cockatoos go and spawn and even manage to sucessfully raise some fry (albeit only 3 out of about 50 made it). The cockatoos would attack anything in the tank. Not looking forward to the angels having a go. Might have to move some fish if they do! Keyholes have tried but alway ate the eggs. Once got them to wiggler stage though.
