Hi...

We'll after much research and reading i have finally found a likely candidate for my 65 gal. communtiy tank....I wanted to add a NW cichlid. But something that wasn't to agressive and could be kept single. Now so far it all points to Keyhole's....ive read that they are very placid...and will grow between 4-5"...now i was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them...can they be kept single...are they as calm as ive read...It will be with the fish stated in my sig. below....
Thnx for any help...

Should be fine in your tank. They are usually pretty placid like you said. But keep in mind all fish have different personalities and you might get a über aggressive one (that would be my luck :p ). Did you consider something like a severum or green terror? They are incredible fish IMO. Gold severums are beautiful and both are usually pretty calm.

Keyholes can be pretty placid but I have to strongly disagree with impurs suggestion of a GT, there is no way what so ever that they should be considered for your tank they are an agressive fish and shouldn't be considered at all if you want fish left in there besides a pelco and a GT

I didn't know they grew to 4-5". :dunno:

I have one in a 10g and he is very peacefull. He's only 2" so he'll probably get moved to a bigger tank soon.

He gets along great with a Blue Ram and some neons.

He's definatly one of my favorite fish.

We'll im pretty sure im going to get one...my Ifs just got about 20 of them...i was thinking about rams...but ive heard that they can be very sensitive so i ruled them out...still wondering if keyholes are ok singular?

Thnx for the replys :p

They can be kept single. Mine is doing great.

fishprofiles.com says their maximum size is 2.8"

They can be kept singular but I think they prefer to have friends. I have two fully grown males and they are my favourite fish and they get along with all kinds of fish. Including other cichlids, auch as Angels, kribs, rams and apistos. But recently I've had to put my blue rams in with the keyholes and one little blue ram believes he now owns my big tank and is attacking all the other fish even though they are 10 times his size and the keyholes are running away form him  Very Funny!!
Defineately recommend Keyholes to anyone as they are very hardy fish with good personality, they are so underestimated I think!!

I have 2 keyhole cichlids although I was told that if I only wanted one then it wouldn't be a problem with this breed, I just like buying things in pairs, makes my numbers in the tank even.
My 2 are very placid and get on great with the rest of the tank community. (Betta, Gouramis, Mollys, Plecs, Ottos and Guppies) They will even come to the hand to feed now as well.
They are great fish

Thnx for all the replies :) ...as we speak im aclimating a cute little keyhole into my tank...hes small...and im kind of worried cause he will be the smallest...but hes got plenty of hiding spots and some dense plants to hide in so i hope he'll be ok :-( ....
Thnx alot....

hmmm.... i do have room for another... :hyper: ...no-one wants to be lonely!

Ya...so far hes doin really good...no one is buggin him and he's just lookin for food...to early to tell...but so far so good :D I'll get a pic of him asap!

Keyholes are lovely fish, I keep mine on his own and seems to be fine, but can't can't help wondering if it'd be happier with a buddy..... i did buy one months ago that had white spot, so he went back to the shop, it spent all it's time in hiding, i've had my current Keyhole for about six weeks and he's active and cheeky, but not aggressive.
Letys hear it for Keyholes! :kana:

Dig, a curviceps would also be fine in there, another peaceful cichlid. Also, a festivum. There are plenty of choices of peaceful NW cichlids. Or for example a bolivian ram.
