keep a pair of kribs in a 20 uk gallon tank with four platies and a couple of swordies??

You will see my sig below and whilst there have been no problems yet between any of the rams or kribs I have been assured that they are on there way at some point.

thanks in advance.

I've kept Kribs for 6 years off and on. When mixing with Rams I usually like to give the Rams a numerical advantage. That being said I don't see any real problems with your mix. Have your Kribs started spawning yet?

I've kept a pair of breeding Kribs in a 20g (uk) with some neons , harlequins , danios etc.. with no problem at all for quite a while - you'll have no problems with that mix youve got

no not yet, which is why (i think) i haven't yet had much trouble break out between the kribs and rams.

i thought I would be ok (mainly because the platies and swordies are higher dwellers and they really dont pose any threat to kribs) but it's always best to make sure.

cheers guys.

:/ 20 GAL is a little tight for even one pair , eventually you may have a problem .

:) Kribs are west African , though very similar to new world cichlids .

You should be fine with a 20G - Kribs only grow to 4 inches(for the male and smaller for the female) - the only problem you may find is that once they have bred and you have fry you may need to remove the fry after about a month as the male will be ready for breeding again and in a small tank the agression level may increase if the female isnt ready as she has fry with her.

I've never had this problem but I know of friend who has.

All fish are diff so 20g for my pairs may have been fine and they were ok but another pair may cause problems - you just have to watch them and see what happens

Hi Steve,

I don't think your tank size is a problem or the fish combination. The only problem with Kribs is when they start spawning and looking after the subsequent fry. They are incredible parents and will viciously protect their young. A tank divider on hand could be useful when this happens just as a temporary measure.

I have a friend who didn't take this advice in the same situation and lost a few fish due to the Kribs aggression, including a full grown Gold Gourami. :rip:

Although that sounds quite negative, it needn't be, with the right precautions you should have a trouble free tank and its great watching the Kribs bringing up their young. :D

My large Firemouth got the "stuff kicked out of him " when my Kribs bred - they were quickly moved to a new "Krib Breeding" tank

Firemouth's and Kribs are often sold as the only Cichlids that may be OK in a community tank. Whilst this generally true, in my experience thay do not do well together as they are both still aggressive species. Plus Firemouth's grow much much bigger than Kribs and breeding Kribs will pretty much kick the stuff out of anything they see as a threat.

i currently keep kribs an firemouths, in the same tank...
luckerly the tank is large enough for them both to breed with minimal problems
flaring occasional darting rarely but lil damage is actually done.
live very well together, and make a great contrast

No need for that. If your command of the english language is insufficient to produce something more original than that, then i suggest you don't bother. Reported to Mods.
