Keeping Discus

What I have been learning.

4 Real hard core discus people are nuts. The discus world is kind of like the dog show world in how picky they are. Also breeding fish For trates people like. Like smaller eyes and bulldog face.

eye size is not a trait that is bred into discus. ie they dont breed certain strains sepcificly to have small eyes. when you hear somebody refering to a discus as having big eyes this is usually a sign of a stunted fish, when the eyes seem too big for the size of the fish.

yes hormones do get used in discus too often. a good guide is that if say a 3 inch juvenile is showing adult colours , then it has most likely been hormone treated .

I was on simply and started a thing all about eyes I have looking it up and found that they are breeding the newer strains to have smaller eyes like the blood pigeon and others of the yellow and red strains the newer ones. They tend to be smaller eyes then the old strains like the turqs. I have been doing my research on this because I found it so weird.

really? well i stand corrected . i didnt know that

yeah it's weird. The breeders know what people want and everyone now seems to be looking for discus with small eyes so that's what they give the people. Yes they say eye size can be part of stunting if the eye is really big like my scribble might be a little stunnted. But my others the eye is not that big. You should check out the thred on eyes it's intrsting. Most wilds have "biger" eyes then our domestics.

well that one is good and what got me thinking. I started one that says eyes in the beginner section.

Ajs my fish are 2"-3" I did not take the easy way.

Another thing I learned. Always ask question.

Im pretty new to Discus. I started in march with 2 small one, now I have 9. I couldnt stop buying them. The hardest thing Ive found are the extra water changes. My water is far from "perfect" for discus too.
PH - 7.8
Nitrite 0
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate - 20
KH - 6.1dH°
GH - 15.7dH°

Temp 29.5oC

Don't fancy doing daily waterchanges in winter either - brrrr
