Hi guys i have recently bought a 48 litre tank which is currently been cycled and am now looking at stocking it as soon as i know all levels are safe.

I really want a male (and perhaps a few female) bettas in there as well as some other fish. Is this possible?

Ideally i would like:
1 male betta
2 female bettas
2 angel fish
6 -8 neon tetras
6-8 tiger barbs

Would the tank be big enough for these numbers and would they all live together with minimal problems.

Thanks in advance

betta and angels cant mix although neons will mix fine. also i think you would be overstocking a bit with all of them fish

Never kept tiger barbs but have heard they are fin nippers so probablies not wise with long fin flowing male bettas and that of angel fish although you can get short fin male bettas which are just as colourful.
Depeniding on the betta male he may go for the neons due to their striking colours which may resemble a rival male.

i have had no problems with my angels and my bettas i agree with the tiger barbs though

definatly not with female bettas unless you divide the tank females one side male the other but not together also with females you need more then 2 you need in my own exp atleast 7 females

48 L is no where near big enough for angels (who really need a 4 foot long and 2 foot tall tank for a group)or tiger barbs (who really need to be kept in shoals of at very least 6 but pref more to limit aggression). As has been noted, you should not keep male and female fighting fish in the same tank all of the time. They can be mixed when breeding but should then be seperated again. A nice idea for a 48 L would be a betta with a shoal of 6-8 pygmy corydoras and a shoal of small shoaling fish and maybe a few dwarf shrimp.

1 male betta and 8 neons would work okay :D
i have a Male betta with 9 cardinals and 5 fire tetra in a 60liter

i have 1 male Betta with 6x glowlight Tetra in my 60L..they get on fine.

I have a male betta with 3 male endlers and 10 chilli rasbora (plus snails and shrimp) in a 50l and they're fine :)

But as everyone else has said, that tank is WAY too small for angels, and not suitable for tiger barbs either.

You could probably go for a sorority of female bettas OR a male + some neons or other small fish.

Thanks guys, I have am currently just getting levels correct in tank but have decided to just stock it with 6 neons and a few other smaller fish (Would perhaps 6 tiger barbs be ok with just the neons or do they grow too big?)

I also ordered a Fluval edge 23 litre last night to house a single Betta and am waiting in today for delivery of a fluval osaka 155 that I ordered wednesday to house some angel fish.

Thanks again for all the advice, my local aquatics centre told me I would be fine with the fist list of fish in the tank so am now thinking they are more interested in selling numbers of fish than the wellbeing of them.

What would be good companions to go in with the angels?

Hi yeh any big chain fish shop is more intrested in selling and making money im afraid its the family run business that make some of the best fish shops

Also angels are semi agressive so anything that isnt a little softy personaly ( and people may disagree). But my first angels is full agressive and he lives with another angel who isnt they get along nicely and also dwarf gouramis he gets along realy well with :)

Remember its better to have a higher tank then longer for angels my first isnt a year old and hes about 5-6" high!

No, Tiger Barbs need to be kept in groups of at least six but pref over 10. This way any aggression is kept within the group. They are also quite fast swimming fish and need more room than the tank would offer them. I currently have 17 Black Ruby Barbs which are a similar size to Tigers and 48L is not big enough as fully grown they are fairly bulky.

You would be best not filling the Edge to the top in order to leave enough space for the Betta to breath. They have a labyrinth lung and need access to the surface.

The Osaka 155 is around two feet tall so that should be tall enough for Angels, but it is only two feet long isnt it? You would be best with a single Angel in this, possibly along with some Corydoras and larger Tetras. The problem with stocking more Angels would be the length of the tank. A breeding pair could be too aggressive in that volume for any other tank mates.
