I have my tank up and running for about a year now - here are the stats

36l with undergravel and conventional filter
temperature = 30deg
one live plant (have had up to 3)
ph 7
amonia = 0
nitrate <5mg/l
nitrite<0.1mg/l
25% water change weekly
feed is dried blood worms - every second day

the fish i have had are red tailed shark, some kind of catfish, fighter, neons, guppies, mollies - nothing too exotic.

i generally have about 5 fish in (including the smaller neons). the fish seem to last about 4-8weeks then die. i have one neon left and it must be about 4month old. there are small snails in the tank (came in with some plants).

the water quality is constant.

Is there somehting else i should be doing - or is this loss rate about normal?

Temp is really high,mine is at 26,only other thing,maybe feed a basic flake food that gives a spectrum of benefits.Keep the high protein stuff as treats.
36l is very small for a rts.

sorry - 60l tank DOH!

what is rts?

the 30deg is set that way cause the fish shops here seem to have the water that warm. i will knock it back a bit.

I would rehome the shark they need 40 gallon tanks.

Yes you do need a 40 gallon for 1 red tailed shark, thats not to say you cant put more fish in a 40 gallon with the shark but they grow very big so need a lot of room.

Your temperature is a little high, try adjusting it to around 26-28 degrees

The fighter shouldnt really be kept with guppies.. try and get him a 3-5gallon tank. :)

had the fighter and the guppies at different times.

ok, water down to 28 and then after a week or so, down to 26. most of the shops around me have the tanks warmer.

I wonder,with the temps in fish shops,lots of folks will push the temp up to fight diseases,just wondering if this is why fish shops keep temps at that level?
Makes you wonder if you should try another fish shop?
Also,was thinking about your neons,did you find them dead or did they just disappear?I'm wondering if your catfish may have ate them.You shouldn't laugh really,but my bro bought 20 and wondered why they kept getting less and less till he saw fatty munching a neon one night.

Are you sure the fish are dying and its not the red tailed shark picking them off.

shark died ages ago - outlived the neons. i found all but one neon - so its not the cat fish - which is dead too.

How many fish do you have left now.
The neons did there red stripe area ever look bleached out.
