I have just read on a other forum on the krib about people that is using kitty litter at a substitute for expensive clay below a 1" layer of sand..

I am thinking of starting a tank like that and post the progress on the forum is anyone else would like to try..

BUT I would love it if someone else tried and could let me know if it will be worth my time.

Not tried - but doesn't sound like a good idea....

....there could be all sorts of additives/chemicals in it (but then again maybe not :/ )

www :)

I have tried and it works fine for me. Make sure you get the one that says its 100% natural clay with no other additives.

A lot of them have addictives to neutralize odor, which are harmful for fish. I'm not sure of the name of these addictives, which is why I jsut avoid it. It's much cheaper for me to get playsand. $4 for 50 lbs.

>>> A lot of them have addictives

This is the problem. Original cat litter was made from Fullers Earth, a simple clay, but like most things, it has been "improved" now.

Yeah, in modern kitty litter there has to be antibacterial and oder eating chemicals....... I'd not want that anywhere near my tanks.

we've got loads of blue clay in out garden... horrible stuff.

if i could get some clean clay (eg just a slive of clay - no dirt) could that be used?

I need ID this fish, but I post the pics here to I can copy them to the General chat page. oeps sorry.. lol
