Juwel Rio 240 Or Fluval 240

Hi, they are both very well built designed tanks, I have never had the Juwel so can't comment, recently purchased a Fluval 240 and I can only say the cabinet is very stylish, was easy to put toether, the tank is very well desinned and was very easy to set up also, the newer ones are comin with predrilled holes to run the filter in/out directly through the cabinet, very nice

i personally would opt for the juwel rio. i have a roma 240 and like many others it drips water from the top plastic trim down the front and sides of the tank which is very annoying. it could be sorted with some silicone around the inside but when full of water and fish its not an ideal thing to do..... i also have a rio 180 and have no bad things to say about it. its well built and looks great. some people have trouble with the light ballast not working which are expensive to replace but mines fine..

i guess with both tanks people will have pros and cons so just go for the one you prefer the look of

just a thought. both tanks new will cost a small fortune have you considered a tank made by someone like ND aquatics? you will get more for your money so you could have room permiting a bigger tank

i have looked at the 4 foot one from nd aquatics,thats £405 delivered including cabinet,but comes with no lights,filter or heater.probably better made tanks,but i still have to add on the cost of everything else

have you looked in the special offer part of their site as they have some great priced tanks in there sometimes?

also the juwel internal filters arent all that and take up quite a bit of space that could be used for decor or fish.... i assure you it wont be long before you want to rip it out and install an external

the fluval 305 that comes with the roma isnt a great filter either. fluval seem better at the internal filters and not so good at externals with the FX5 being an exception. i sold my 305 within a month or 2 of having it as it just wasnt good enough and you do hear some horroe stories about their external filters. so again im sure in time it will be replaced by a more reliable external

a 2nd hand decent filter doesnt have to cost the earth

I find juwel filters perfectly fine for an average community tank i have added an tetratec ex1200 to my rio 400 as additional filteration as it has large clown loach that like to stir up the sand and the water wasn't always crystal clear with just the juwel filter

Having bought a Rio240 as my first tank last spring, in hindsight there a few things that would stop me from buying it a second time around...

• The integrated filter is not that wonderful, even with the upgraded 1000lph pump (sadly the Bioflow 1500 pump I bought last autumn was a non-starter further upgrade, which you tried to help me find a suitable Bioflow 6 chamber for) I got as part of the Seapets price matched deal I got at Maidenhead Aquatics, although the flow might suit an understocked tank for fish that like calm water. Its also quite chuncky, taking up a fair bit of space.
• I really wish I had considered better the preference of my fish stocking before getting a setup with 108W of T5 lighting. Some of my fish dislike the brightness full-stop, while the water current needed by most of my fish means that "low tech" plants (Java and Windelov Fern) are the only viable long term real ones, who do not need T5 lighting and the Dennerle Deponitmix I laid under the "Congo sand."
• The cabinet cupboards do not appear to be big enough to house larger external filters like FX5s; Eheim 2078s; APS 200EFs etc.

Have you looked at NDaquatics tanks? Have they still got that offer on that others were writing about?

yes nd aquatics still have the tanks on offer,as i said the 4 foot one is £405 delivered,but i still need to buy the lights,starter unit and heater.

blow the "package" tanks clean out of the water in terms of quality .

but out of your 2 choices i would have the juwel. deffinately the better built of the 2

I have a rio 400 and a vision 180, love both tanks as they are pretty well built and look quite good. only thing i can say about them is that the top flaps are a little delicate. the rio 400's light bar has caused me some problems but was quite easy to fix with a bit of DIY rather than going through Juwel which can be quite expensive

thanks for everybody's comments and recommendations,i have had a further look on the nd aquatics website,so looks like i will go for there one,just need to look into selling my rio 125,so if anyone has any idea how much i could sell it for i would be much obliged,it 14 months old,no filter has cabinet and lights.
