Hello everyone - well its finally here - my new Juwel Rio 240. Was going to have a go at planting a tank out but decided Malawis would be better homed here :)

Am collecting some ocean rock on Saturday - but at the moment am undecided about coral sand or coral gravel. Whats the preference? Recently changed my community tank from gravel to sand and the fish much prefer it - but have read mixed reports as to what the Malawis prefer. Any advice would be great - thanks :)

Once I have rock and substrate will set to work building a rocky cave like underwater habitat - then fill with water and get it ready for a fishless cycle. Really going to take my time with this tank and make sure I get it right.

Then of course I will need some help with the stocking. Had a look at our lfs (Maidenhead at Pontardduilais) and they stock the Mbuna, Haps and Auloncaras (sp?) - they also have quite a good selection of Tanganikyan (sp?) hard to type with my son chatting and pressing at the keyboard LOL.

Personally I fancy the Mbuna but the man at the lfs reckons the Haps and Auloncaras have better colours? Also couldn't get much help from him regarding what goes with what etc etc.... so hoping you guys can point me in the right direction.

Look forward to getting to the point of getting fish and chatting about them here as all my friends think I have gone mad! Nobody is interested in my fish LOL.

Many thanks

Lesley :fun:

have a look at the pics of my tank.its a rio 240 as well.coral sand would be better for the fish to rumage around in.sand also looks nicer(in my opinion). choosing the fish is really a personal thing.what do you prefer?????none are hard to look after, but, getting the right mix of fish is very difficult.

Your tank is big enough to cope with Mbuna, Haps or Aulonocara so do some research and see what you fancy. I'd disagree with your LFS on the colouration point, check out Pseudotropheus Demasoni and show me a better looking Hap or Peacock. That said, i'm a little bit biased when it comes to Mbuna and a mixed Peacock tank does look stunning. :)
