Hi people im new to the tropical scene and just bought my rio 180 a couple of days ago. started a fish less cycle and was just wondering that the filter that came with my tank, well is it sufficient enough? will the filter that i have now do the job or is it worth on lucking for a second filtration system just to be on the safe said. if so what types will be reliable enough and will work well with my existing filter. thanks alot john

I have the same rio 180. I have used the internal filter for approx 4 years and had no probs. I decided I wanted to change to a Pmdd system which required a better filtration so I keep the Juwel filter and use the venturi to distribute the warm water (internal heater) and distribute my Co2. I also have anexternal Eheim 2215 in the cupboard below.

It all works like a dream but the internal filter for me was fine for years until I decided to change my system.

Great that you are starting with a fishless cycle. Did you happen to read the articles here or how did you stumble across the information?

ive just been reading the method rdd1952 posted and it has certainly helped me along the way to get the cycle correct. that guy certainly knows his stuff and its great that hes sharing the information to us all. i only started the cycle a couple of days ago, so still waiting for the dust to settle so to speak

Yes, the article is quite a good compendium of good technique from other fishless articles - and more robust I think because he tested it with his own experiences. I have found it to be helpful to be reading other help threads as the time goes by. There are various other bits to the story and things you can watch. pH for instance, can be watched to be sure it doesn't get too low. Fishless cycles will stall out down around pH 6.0 and bacterial can die off down around 5.5 and below.
