Juwel Internal Heater

I have removed my internal Juwel filter, but I was planning on still using the heater. Is it OK to simply attach the heater to the side of the tank? Does it pose a threat to the glass or anything?

Do I need some sort of protection for the fish?

Its fine to use, its no different from any other internal heater.

You will need a holder to attach it to the side of the tank. Theres no need to cover it really, when I used to use an internal heater, my plec used to sit on it all the time when it was on.
