Well.. i tested the water last night to find 0.25 of nitrite, although the ammonia was still 0. so, as i have added nothing to the tank recently, it meant that i had a problem with the bacteria. The only thing i can out it down to is the Juwel internal filter, so.. straight to work on the tank :( .

Does anyone else find that these can get a little messy in the houseing and filter sponges, far quicker than it probably should, and that the poly pads need replacing more often than once per week (or washing). All in all, despite how well it did in PFK this month, im far from impressed with this filter. or am i.. should i be impressed that it gets dirty really quick which means the filter is doing well.. Or.. should i look at it that the filter is inadequate to cope with the size of the tank. Either way, im losing any trust/faith in the thing... Please tell me your views on this ;)

also..ive been considering an emeim instead...can anyone explain what the differemce is in the ranges such as Ecco and Professional and professional 2... apart from £100 or so..

also.. if people have put them in a juwel rio 180.. did you replace the internal one and remove the whole juwel one (like bloozoo), take out the fitler, but use the filter houseing, or run it along side..

oh. .one last thing.. do they cause a big current and upset your plants ;)

Squid,

Juwel filters are sufficient for tanks as much as a Reckord 120 or a Rio 125 but for anything bigger, it is better to have a canister.

About the filter getting clogged too much.. if it is getting clogged too much then obviously there is a lot of waste. I usually dont clean my blue foams for a few months and I just wash the white floss part in tap water every week to get rid of the crud. Because I wash it every week in tap water, it does not have a lot of bacteria develop on it and the blue sponges take care of the bacteria without getting clogged.

I do think that the Juwel filter can do much better mechanical filtration then most canisters but for some they also waste a lot of space. Its a personal choice if you want to keep the filter or remove it and if you have a big tank, I would leave it there as an additional filter but not as the main filter.

I cannot comment on thr Eheims as I have never used the new range.. I would be inclined to buy something like a 2215 or 2217 classic canisters on eBay for as low as £20 but keep in mind that these are not self priming filters but they do a wonderful job.

Plants ironically do like a a flow of water... how strong depends really on the plant. If its strong enough to cause damage to the plant then its not good if its just strong enough to swirl the plant a bit then they really love it. Flowing water is better then still water for the plants as it helps distribute nutrients and gasses to them.

sister link aka part 2

i think you do with the extra flow on the left side (see image on link0

Thanks for linking them.. it was not my aim to duplicate.. its just that one was about my stats issues.. and the other was in connection with me looking at filtration in general, and my next purchase.. They seem to have crossed a little more.

er . probably yes.. it would have very little flow on the left. You could add a simple pump to help circulate the water or you could re-direct your juwel head to throw water paralell to the vallis as this will allow a uniform circulation throughout.

Thanks for your help .. both of you..

looks like i will have to have a play.. .. it may even come to moving the valis.. i guess filtration comes before asthetics eh.. ;)

EDIT:.. nim.. ive done that now (see the linked thread for the new pic... )

SO.. that leaves any helpful info from eheim people please.. if you can help me with the range..

also now that ive been checking around what filter is it the standard one? because ive got some negative vibes for it, just wondering because in two months im getting the fluval duo deep 800, and well should i a) remove the 3+ one and replace, B) add an extra if possible or wil it be ok? also any links on how to remove the filter would be appricate
(oh if i should replace it, what with)

Isnt the 3plus filter attached by suction cups.. i had an old 2plus that was..

The juwel one is stuck on with silicon, and can be removed with the use of a razor blade.. (thanks for that bloozoo ;) )

lets see what the eheim people have to say.. they seem to be popular around these parts..

ta and oh yeh, btw theres a way of ataching suckion cups with out they falling off, i think its dont have water on the glass when you atach the sucker then fill it with water and it should hold, so should i change the filter?
to what?

not sure.. lets see what others have to say.. how many gallons is the tank. ?? and yes.. water helps the suction no end ;)

i learnt that the hard way with a thermometer.. i stuck it to the side of the tank (a glass one) with no water.. to find it smashed the next day.. ho humm you live and learn.

well im getting the fluval duo deep 800 set, which comes with the fluval 3+ and ive heard that much stuff about im not sure if i want the filter in it really, its dumps all the gunk when lifted out being a main one suppose i could just not bother with that and go for a different set up hmm
but ill prob stay with fluval

The trouble with juwel filters is that they are designed with the continental European hobby in mind, that is keeping very heavily planted tanks with just a small ammount of small fish. The British and American hobbies tend to concentrate on the live stock and add plants only as a finishing touch in most cases so the filter is put under a lot more strain than it was ever meant to. As an example the Rio 300 and 400 models come with a powerhead that pushes 1000 litres of water per hour, that is a turn over of just over 3 times an hour for the 300 and even less for the 400 when the recomended turn over for any tank is usually at least 5 times per hour in the Anglo/American hobby.

My advise is to remove the juwel filter completely and replace it with a suitable sized eheim canister, the classic 2215 model would suit your tank very well or if you have more money to spend a pro 2. I would advise against the ecco models as their design means you get a slower flow rate than advertised and the pipes clog regularly in my experience. BTW i run all my larger tanks including my 205 and 180 gallon set ups on Eheim 2217 filters, for reliabilty and effectiveness you cant go wrong.

Thats good informatition CFC....

could someone remind me what self priming means.. and whether the 2215 is?

cheers.....

Squid

The 2215 is not self priming, it needs a good suck on the outlet pipe before you join the hoses together to get it flowing.

Self priming just means that there is a lever or plunger to get the syphon going but once the filter is going you very very rarely need to prime it again.
