At the moment my small tank is extremely over populated especially for its size so I'm in process of trying to get a new tank! Not sure what combinations to keep in my tanks, the tank I'm hopefully going to be given is approx 2ft (not 100% sure as havent seen it yet)

I've definately decided on keeping my betta in the tank its in now but not sure who to keep with it the rest of my fish are as follows

1 silver dollar
4 sunset platies
2 plecs
3 peppered cories
8 glowlight tetras
6 emerald eye rasboras

all of which are living in my one tank at the moment which is only 30litres (yes I know I'm WAY overstocked which is why I'm getting the new tank) Ok silver dollar is also going to have to go soon but need a bigger net as he seems to have grown since being moved to the smaller tank! So who should I keep in with my betta?

I would keep the cories in with your bettas

A 2 foot tank is likely to be either 60 ltrs or 70 ltrs, depending on height. So still not an enormous amount of room. What kind are your plecs? The silver dollar you say is going.

I agree there is a good argument for keeping the cories in with the betta. On the other hand peppered cories can get to 3 inches and may well feel a little cramped in the 30 ltrs. Is the betta ok with the rasboras?

What I would do would be to get the betta his own little 2 gal bowl (not expensive). Then I would set up the 2 foot tank for the cories, platies and rasboras or glowlights. This tank will still be a little overstocked so you need to be very virtuous with water changes. Then keep the small tank for the rasboras.

Suppose you might be able to fit the betta in with the rasboras.

The betta gets on with everything at the moment well except for feeding time when he gets a bit territorial and chases the platies out of his corner other than that they are all fine! I wish I could set up another space for my betta on his own but I think I'm going to be pushing it setting up a 2ft tank in my room (my father doesnt know yet but have a good argument ready)

At the moment Ive been really good and kept up with my daily water changes!

Is there any chance I could keep one of the plecs in with the betta? and maybe move the peppered cories in the 2ft tank with the other fish and maybe get some smaller corries to go in with the betta? The plecs are possibly BN's from what people have said.

I have a feeling that the rasboras might die off in the next couple of years I'm not sure how long they normally live but I've had them for at least two maybe three years possibly longer as can't remember if I got them whilst in current relationship or not!

I wouldn't have thought the plecs would be a problem socially with the betta, as its a bottom dwelling fish and wouldn't really infringe on the bettas terratory

but I do think that the size of tank you eventually need for the pleco would be an issue.

I originally wanted ottos but when I went to get some they had non but said chinese algae eaters would be fine at my LFS so bought 3 (were on offer) then found out that they werent suitable for my tank so took them back on sat and once again shop was out of ottos and shrimp so the guy just bagged up two tiny plecs approx 1" whilst I was trying to explain that had only a small tank and he claims they'll only grow to 4" but I doubt it somehow so if they end up too big will have to rehome one as will keep one in the 2ft tank!

Only time will tell as to what size they'll be!

Yeah I think they are right, Bristle noses grow to around 5 inches or so.

So would the bn be ok in the tank with betta or would it be best off with the other bn in the 2ft tank?

I so hope I get this tank! Dunno where I'll put it yet but I'll have to make room!

I suppose you could keep a plec in with the betta, but the betta wont mind either way, it would probably prefer to be on its own more than anything.

as for the plecs you could keep them together, but I would assume that they, might get terratorial over each other if there is not enough dwelling places (caves etc) for them in the tank.

My mate keeps two bn's in his 90 litre tank, 1 female and 1 male and has not experienced any problems (yet).

I am afraid my experience in plecs is limited. I do have my own plec but he is a gentle giant.

I just hope I get this tank soon! At least then I'll be able to start to cycle it etc!

I noticed that they were terratorial when I got them as I had them in a breeding trap to quarantine them and then make the move into the other tank less stressful as wouldnt have to chase them about to catch them! only thing was that one chased the other so that went out the window!
