I went to a petstore today to get a decorative background ! and what I saw was a tragedy! a huge tank filled with goldfish have all died. A shopper wanted to speak with the manager , and the employee said she didnt know how to manage the tank, and she works in the fish area

:-(

yup i dont kno how people get jobs at working in the fish department if they kno nothing about fish

Like all shops, its usually one or two knowledgable people and the rest sales staff.

i saw something ridiculous at a pets at home i saw malawi's in with goldies :/ + there staff had no idea which fish were livebeares eventually they guessed at clown loaches which were labeld to grow at a max of 5cm lol

I find it a littl bit hurtful that fish aren't treated with the same amount of respect a dog or a cat or a horse would get. That's just me, though. I've always thought they should have equal care. Just because they live in water doesn't mean they're any less.

I think because it's somewhat more difficult to form the kind of needy-human bond with a fish that you can have with your dog. I mean, if one of my favourite fish died, I'd be sad, but if it were my trusty canine, I'd be devestated. I guess in our own human egotistical world, we like things that return our affection, and much as I enjoy talking to my little girly betta who always comes to see me, it's not the same as saying "Sash, come give mum a cuddle" and having 70 pounds of black lab climb on the couch and lean against you and put her muzzle along your neck.

Awww, I must go find my dog now and give her a hug, oh here she is, right at my feet where she always is

Our dog is part of the family, our fish are not, they're just pets. They're nice pets, good pets, interesting pets, and I'd be sad if some of my favorites died, but nothing like a dog (wouldn't care if a cat died, hate cats).

Hmmm, I must be one of few who gets all teary when a fish of mine dies lol.

I think all animals should be treated equally. I do admit, I would feel far worse if my dog died, because she is my trusty and loyal furry companion, and it's not like the fish can follow me around and protect me, when need be, when I go outside, or into the forest near my house. Or out to the lake.

But that doesn't mean that fish should be treated any worse than dogs, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs a boot in the ass :grr: if one is an employee in a pet store (or anybody else, for that matter) not knowing how to care for them is hardly an excuse

Sigh... it's too bad the SPCA didn't punish pet stores who take horrible care of their fish.

i have a couple of jack russels (one only 8 weeks old) and a cat. its a hell of a lot easier to look after them than the multitude of different species of fish. anyone has the ability to look after a dog or cat, but fish take a little more attention.

dog: feed in morning. walk every day. let out for crap.
cat: feed only when she can be bothered to come back home (that's if she hasn't supplied her own rodenty meal). she generally looks after herself.
fish: research compatability and care requirements, regular water changes and water tests. feeding - they all have their different diet requirements. maintenance of equipment.

and yet i'd still be more upset if my cat died, even though i hardly see her. i hate to think what i'll be like when one of my dogs dies. :-(

anyway thats slightly OT

back on topic. yes it is unacceptable the lack of knowledge in some fs. my little sister could probably get a job in my local pets at home - she had a goldfish once when she was 11 and it lasted almost 6 months. surely thats all the qualifications she needs!?
