Ok so newbie and socked my tank with a few fish. I did not know the howmany male to female . The pet store did not say a thing to me . Soo I need to know what I need to get to make it even. I know I hav emore males and my two mollies are I think getting picked on a bit,. heres what I have. I am pretty sure the sex on them all are right

2 male red wag Platies

1 male gold micky mouse plaite
1 female dalmation mollly

1 F pearl Molly

SO what should I get to even up the numbers a bit.

I would like to add some neon tetras

I do have 6 ZeberaDanios and I even think they are picking at mollys a bit. we are ending day 3 of being in new tank. so I know they have to get use to it and all yet. But I do kow th Mollys are hiding alot ,.

Thanks

Platys and mollys will interbreed. I would suggest getting your numbers to a female dominated ratio. If you have a way with your fishstore to change out some of your males for females, that's what I would do. It should be 1 male:2 females. You can also go for all of one sex, but personally I like the occasional platy fry swimming around. It's fun to watch the babies.

I was under the impression platy and molly cannot interbreed due to being from different genus.
Guppies and mollies belong to the Poecilia genus and platies and swordtails belong to the Xiphophorus genus although they all belong to the same Poeciliidae family. This suggests they can interbreed amongst their own genus (platy x swordtail) but not breed with fish from a different genus.
This was my interpretation. I may be wrong though.

Have a look at the sticky at the top of this forum. It explains why they cannot interbreed.

I think I have room for more any ways So I was thinking just getting my f males up. Does it matter if they are mollys or platies. Do they stick together I have the two mollys so I guess a few more F laties would be the way to go...

I may have been wrong about the interbreeding then. I usually don't spout stuff off unless I'm sure. Sorry!

I would up the female platies and you would be good to go.

YO definitely need more ladies and that many males can stress your lady out. They cannot interbreed with each other but platys have a sex drive like no other and I wouldnt put it past them to try and have a go with your lady mollies. I watched a platy try to get it on with a cory once.

Lol it's ok. Yeah I agree up the number of females if you have space for it. I have had bad experience with mollies. I put them in when the tank wasn't cycled and they died within hours  I now know they like a well cycled tank! One of my many booboos I have made

Thank you everyone for your responce... I will try to do that soon.

Molly and platy cannot interbreed, even using artificial insemination techniques. In that respect things are safe. In your situation I would add 2 or 3 female platies of a color that you like. Platies are indiscriminate in terms of color but definitely prefer their own kind over a molly. I bet your mickey mouse is being harassed endlessly.

well my micky is a male and some times I see him picking on the mollys . I had added two more female mollys. That is allmy local store had. I have to go out of twon to bet platys. But I will add another female one. my count is up to

2 red wag platys mlale

1 male micky mouse

1 pearl Molly Female

1 dalmatian Molly Female

just add two more female mollys.

So I am guessing a female plty is in order

I have some zerbra danios and wanted to add some tetera. I am thinking that is enough in my tank

I posted in your other thread. You could leave your platies how they are. If you add a female, she will be harrassed. You would need more females then males, so you would have to add a lot of female platies if you have 3 males.

This was complicated for me in the beginning, I had a bad ratio and there was a lot of stressed out girls until we fixed our numbers.

That should help. I used to keep platys and swrodtails. I have seen platys and swords go after fish that were not of the same species and try to have "fun" with them. As long as you have equal amounts of males to females, and...as Oldman said, fish of similar color, you should not see any aggression.

Is there anothe female fsh I could add to up the females but have a little different fish. Besides platys and mollys? I was planning onmaybe some neons but they will be grouped together. I just wanted to try one ore kind or is it just best to sick with the few different breads I have.

Do not add a single female platy to your tank. If you have an existing 3 male platies, anything less than about 5 female platies will be a mistake. The male to female ratio is generally accepted as 2 females to each male but as numbers increase a bit closer to equal is acceptable. Any surplus of females is just fine.
