Hey guys i bought my first real tank today (i had a gold fish bowl years ago but that was when i was a kid lol) so today i bought a 25 litre tank with built in lightning and filter and i also bought a specialist heater for my tank. (It is a fluval Chi if your interested in what type it is.)

So now iv been advised to let my filter run for 4-5 days before adding fish to ensure the system is fully adapted for the fish. However im curious as to how many fish it would be advised to keep in a tank of this size and also im looking for the most colourful and beautfiul tropics i can find. I really took a shine to Bettas however i understand they have an aggressive nature and cannot be kept with other Betta fish and certain other fish.

So guys id really like to join this community and I hope you guys can help me out :)

And please if it sounds like im doing something wrong already please let me know, i just want to ensure the best life possible for my eventual fish :)

Firstly, im guessing the store assistant told you to wait 4-5 days then add fish yes?

WRONG!, make sure you fully cycle your tank, theres a sticky on it on this website.

As for fish I dont think a Betta would be great as the Fluval Chi has no lid and Bettas are known for jumping.

You could add some Minnows?

You have a very small tank, by our way of looking at things. As Matt has said, we do have a nice thread that will help you cycle your filter without risking any fish. It will take far more than 4 or 5 days to do it right though. If you choose to go ahead with a fish-in cycle sooner than that, it can also be done properly without damage to the fish but it will take far more effort to do it right. I have links to both the fishless and fish-in cycle threads in my signature area.

Good luck with the new tank! This forum is a great place to find answers. After you read through the beginner's resource threads on cycling, I have a 'do and do not' list link in my signature which answers some of the more common questions we see as a person starts cycling for the first time.

im not sure how safe that would be for fish!

like i said in your other post, a male betta in that size tank would probably be enough - start adding more, and would look pretty crowded. male bettas are great though, big ballsy personalities and you can get some really beautiful colours. mine is all red, with a couple of hints of turquoise in his flanks which shimmer when the light catches it. check out the betta section on here and you will see some great specimins.

matt is right about cycling. its really important to establish the best possible conditions for your fish. always worth mentioning where you are to see if anyone can donate some mature filter media for you to kick start the cycle. you wouldnt need much for your filter.
