Hey!
I just got a few mollies the other day, two creamcicle and two silver.
I've bred platies before, but I'm not sure about these.
Two of them are male, and the other two are female.
And I know that oftentimes you come home with a pregnant female.

I've read a lot about gravid spots, but I'm unsure if this female silver is pregnant.

Also, I've heard that gravid spots are unreliable in telling pregnancies.
Truth?

actually the most reliable. unless its a baby, of which all (guppies atleast) have gravid spots. in early stages of pregnancy

Honestly from my opinion they are unreliable. But thats from expirence with my guppies. I have also found that mollies and guppies are very similiar when giving birth so I would go with the her shape not her gravid spot. I have some guppies that arent pregnant that have gravid spots and some that are pregnant with no gravid spots! I personally say go by their shape. If its an early pregnancy then she may not show that much from the top but her stomuach may poke down some or chest if you prefer to call it that. Give it about two weeks and if she continues to get bigger youll know and still have time to prepare for it. :)

i think shape is reliable for how pregnant she is, and gravid spot is for if she's even pregnant, but they can also go vice versa.

Yes shape is for how pregnant but even in the beginning stages of pregnancy normally fish wouldnt have a gravid spot, not a dark one anyway. It would fill in as it got closer to time for the fish to drop. Many people are fooled by the gravid spots which is why they say that they cant truly count on them to tell.

Now if we onsider the molly in the picture to be normal, and her gravid spot is extreamly dark that would make someone think she was close to dropping. But her shape is not anywhere near ready to stop.

Jinowoof if you want to go by a gravid spot on your molly best to compare her.

That site will help even though it is for guppies the gravid spot does the same thing for mollys.

if shes in a breeder box she MUST BE REMOVED RIGHT NOW!!!!! she will get stressed and die, or abort the pregnancy.

Thanks so much, guys!

Also, she was in a breeder box just so I can get the picture. I let her actually go into it before I raised the box. She's out and about doing her thing now. C:

ok, good. i have known people (including myself) to put a pregnant fish in the breeder box.
