I suggest tha you return the tinfoil barbs asap they grow bigger than goldfish do and keeping them in your 29g tank is not nice.

Ive been thinking of getting a couple of them what tank size would you recommend in US Gal?

no i keep my guppies in the 29 g
& my goldfish in a 25 g
the bards are in a 50 g UK

firstly they are barbs not bards
secondly th absoulute min tank I would house them in is 100 gallons
however they are a schooling and each fish has the potential to reach over 35cm
so 100g is probebly too small for adults.

very doubtfull as they are not sexually mature yet
more than likely just playing.

I'm glad that you will be returning them
if you want a nice barb why not see if your lfs can get some
filament barbs Puntius Filamentosus Or Puntius Assimilis
they olny reach 6" as adults so would be suitable for your 50G tank.
I suggest at least 5 as they are very good schoolers, they also seem
to eat hair algae, well at least mine do.

What will happen... well you wont have that much room in your tank, the fish will be miserable and unhealthy

I have no idea.. Im not a species tank keeper... research the fish on the internet and have a look what they are compatable with, look at the size of them, show your mum and tell her that they will not all fit into the tank and go through fish with her and speak with her about it and see what you can both come up with. Its always good to research your fish before you buy. I made that mistake of not doing that once and ended up with 2 huge Oscars and had to give them away.. I will never make that mistake again.

That many cichlids in that size tank will fight, yes. Try to talk some sense into your mother... people who don't keep fish just don't understand sometimes, try explaining how large your barbs could eventually get.
