Just Bought Tank

Ok after my nan coming round the other day and seeing my salty tank she really wanted one, I managed to talk her out of it because she is 86 and as we all know its a lot of work.

So I just went out and got her a 2ft Juwel tank, heater, filter, light, gravel and some bog wood. Im going to take round to her later and surprise her so will post some pics later but my question is as follows.

What fish should I stock it with, she doesnt want any fish that are agressive but she wants very bright fish.

So im thinking Neons and guppies but any other suggestions.

How about some male fancy tail guppies and some Harlequin Rasboras or Rummy nose Tetras? You get colour and shoaling fish then

You may be better cycling the tank before you give it to your nan

Neons aren't good for a newly set up tank

Maybe harlequins or danios are good starter fish

I agree with every think elisew has said but I would add a Betta to the mix and change the Harlequins to Espei or Hengeli Rasboras.

I don`t personally think a Betta with fancy tail guppies would be a good idea. In my experience the guppies tails won`t last long if you put a Betta with them

Thanks for all the replies, im going to take my fish books round so she can look through the ones she likes.

I will be cycling the tank at my nans so I dont have to carry all the water round in containers but a question I have is can I put some of my saltwater mature filter media in her tank or will that not work?

That marine media could work if you start with a marine water setup and do ~20% water changes to fresh every day or so, allowing the bacteria to adjust to fresh over 7 days or so. Neale Monks wrote about this recently in a thread, or the reverse (fresh to marine).

My nan was over the moon infact she wanted to go there and then to get fish but I have told her the tank needs to cycle first anyway here is a couple of pics, will add more pics when fish added.

Its still a bit mucky but was getting clearer.

Good that she's got you there to guide her through it. The hardest part about cycling is when you can't put the fish in straight away. I reckon the marine media should swork, as long as you slowly acclimate it to being in fresh water rather than salty as has been said. And doing it that way would still be faster than starting from scratch so I say go for it!

Took my nan out over xmas to get her some fish for her tank now it's cycled, sorry for the poor pic quality:

Still a bit of tannin coming off the wood but a hell of a lot better than it was.
