hi, i have just bought a new filter to replace my old one but it is a different style filter and has a smaller sponge altough there is room in the new filter for half of the old sponge, my question is can i cut the sponge from the old filter in half and put it into my new filter with my new sponge, and will my tank go into a mini cycle,

thanks in advance

Hi. Ya, start up your new filter, put the new filter material in it, and then also put as much of the old filter material in there as you can. The old stuff should help speed up the cycle process and limit the amount of cycle the tank will go through. If you don't think you can get very much in, consider running both filters on the same tank until such time as you are confident that the new filter material is colonized.

What size tank do you have and how many/what size fish do you have? You can cut the sponge and put as much of it as possible into the new filter. If you put say 75% of it in the new filter, you would be moving about 75% of the bacteria over. That would probably result in a mini cycle of some type. Maybe put as much of the sponge as you can in the new filter and hang the rest of it in the tank for a few weeks. The size of the mini cycle would depend on how much bacteria you managed to move over.

As already said transfer asmuch media as possible, cut your feeding down for a week and monitor your water stats daily, as long as you cut the feeding down initially you should experience a cycle at all.
