when i went shopping for fish tanks. i first went 2 petco. and i looked at what they had and then decided to try to get someone to help us out with pricing. we had about $600 to spend. so at petco no really came to help us. they walked by us and we tried getting someone but noone. so we go to where i have gotten most of my fish stuff. the guy was very helpful he walked me through and he wrote down what i was going to get w/the price. so we were debating wether or not to get the python now or wait cuz we could still get the 10% discount if we decided to wait. so i though maybe what we had selected should get priced. so i asked him to total it and it came out to be $800. and my mouth hit the floor. the killer was the tank was $500 and the gravel was $100. so these were the only 2 stores i really know i only have gone to 3 in the area. so i did a google and found one close to me. and i go there look to make sure that the place was clean, good selection, etc. so because i was w/my dad we didnt have a vehicle to bring the tank home in so the guy gave me a rough estimate and said well about $375-400 depending on what i got. so 2 marrow im going to pick it up and here is a list of what im getting

55 gallon tank/stand/hood light $200
eheim 2213 or whatever is fitted for the 70 gal. $160ish or less not sure which model
200-50 watt heater $3-40
red flint 50 lbs less than $50
I think i got this stuff added priced not sure if he included stuff like dechlorinator.
then i asked about lighting and the guy said well for a low light u coud use the tube that comes with or u can but an upgrade for $150ish and anothere $50 for the glass top.

then at the other store im going to get a few things like
a bag for the media
python
cycle
dechlorinator
and some other useful but not reall urgent things

because i love that store and i feel guilty that he spent his time for us and we didn't get ianything but $800 is like whoa.

i think this is fairly resonable and again some of the things on the list maybe cheaper but it really depends on the model. i think the guy was in a hurry because we got there close to closing time.

Im going to do a fishless cycle. So is Cycle a good product? I would get biospira if it is better but then again neither if they aren't the any better than other methods of cycling.

so 2marrow at 6:30pm central time i will be busy. i figure im just rinsing and placing the tank. so then the following day im going to my expensive store and do the fun part. any and all advice or suggestions and advice are most appreciated.

ps sorry for the long post.

cycle worked for me, it needs to be kept in a cool place so if where you live has a hot climate it may not work due to stoarge areas being hot. when you get it, keep it in the fridge. My tank (only small nevertheless it should make no difference how big the tank is as long as the ratios of ammonia/cycle added are the same) took 6 days to cycle.

A bloke at another shop told me about another product that does not contain any ammonia or nitrates (ites/?) for the bacteria to feed on but still works a treat - its a german or european company and he recomended it really highly. it was more expensive ($20 australian) and i had just purchased cycle the morning before (for $6)

hope this helps :)

edit: me fail english? that unpossible

I would strongly advise you to order your filter, heaters and other accessories online. You will get them for about 60% of what you pay in a store. Just to give you an example, when I bought my Fluval 304s for my 75 gallon, they were $149.99 at Petsmart. I paid $82.99 at Petsolutions.com. That 10% sounds good but you can do a LOT better online. Even if he raises the price of the tank because you aren't getting everything there, you will still be better off. Try petsolutions.com, bigalsonline.com and even petsmart.com. They will all be much cheaper than buying local.

As for Cycle, don't waste your money. Any "cycling" aide that has not been constantly refrigerated is useless. Those items have set in warehouses where the temps run in the 90s and then hauled trailers where the temps probably run closer to 120. No way any bacteria survives that. Bio Spira is supposed to be good but I have not tried it myself. It also must have been refrigerated though so don't buy it from anything other than a store you trust. You would be much better off to find someone that can give you an old filter from an established tank (even pay them what you would have paid for the Cycle).

I have visited their site before but found them to be pretty high compared to Big Al's and Petsolutions. Best thing to do is visit many sites and compare. WIth shipping, it is best to price the full package of what you need and get it all at one place though. You may pay a couple dollars more at one place than the other but shipping will probably make up for it.

Somewhat off topic but I looked at the first link to the filters. I'm not familiar with Eheim filters but the 2235 for tanks up to 80 gallon seems that it would need to process way more than 185 gallons per hour. General rule of thumb is to process the water 4 to 5 times per hour. Even the other 2 seem low to me.

i would choose playsand from a home improvement store over fish store gravel...you can get enough sand for two tanks that size for literally $3 vs. the $50+ you are going to pay now

i have had nothing but good experiences with foster and smith. i have ordered from petsolutions 3 times and each time, something on my order was left out or they sent the wrong thing. i placed an order in december and still have not received 2 of my items (i have pretty much given up now)
i wont ever order from petsolutions again.
i am going to try that fish place. they have a some less-mainstream products that f&s doesnt carry and they will match prices.
never ordered from big al's. i got their catalog and the fact that nothing had prices turned me off.

but online is definately the way to go. ;)
i would agree with the play sand too. great stuff.

thanks for the replies. but i would rather pick the stuff up from the store because, i can actually see what im buying and shipping. i did look at oneline after i got the pricings and i could get it now for a couple buck more rather than wait for it to ship. and i need to get this as complete as possible before school starts.

thanks for the replies and all.

I understand your wanting it asap but unless your LFS is extremely cheap, for a filter, heater, thermometer, and a power compact light upgrade you would probably spend $100 less even if you upgrade the shipping to 2nd day or even next day. For my 75 gallon, I bought the following:

2 Fluval 304 filters
2 Fluval Surface Skimmers
2 Hydor Inline Heaters
Digital Thermometer
Coralife 4 x 65 Power Compact Lights.

Based on the local stores and I priced them all, I saved almost $300 just on those items. Well worth an extra day or 2 to get it to me.

One other option you might check out: If there is a Petsmart near you, they will match the online pricing in their stores. I have bought several items that way. Simply find it on THEIR website (not just anyones), print out the page and take it to the store. They will honor that price and you don't have to pay the shipping either. You do have to pay tax but if there is a Petsmart in your state, you will have to pay tax even if you order from them online. Good luck with the set up.
