:unsure: Ok this is probably a stupid question but im asking it anyway!!

Ok if you wanted to make a rocky corner in your tank do you have to buy the rocks from your pet/fish shop or can you use any rocks as long as you boil them to kill any bacteria (obviously they may have minerals in them which could affect the tank and that is why im asking) ?? Would that be acceptable?

Also if you are putting a lot of rocks in will this put a strain on the glass or the tank itself due to the weight of them?? If your tank is upstairs or first floor flat should you watch what weight you make your tank??

Hope im not sounding too stupid asking this!! :unsure:

Thanks again

well i know you must be carefull not to put 'soft' rocks in as they will desolve and play hell with your tank.one way of testing them is to have a control rock and put some vinegar on it,if its soft you will see a chemical reaction.rocks in fish shops cost loads of dosh, try garden centers and get some slate rock there are quite a few other ones there you can have too(used for garden rockery).And most importantly they are very cheap.as for aquarium upstairs if its big you need to find out the weight and realistically ask an architect about it.
hope this helps
forgot to say the rocks where i live have very high levels of iron in them this put me off using them :(

If you click on the link in my signature, there is a really good article on rocks.

Good links guys and thanks to you all!!!

Next question,

Is it better to use big rocks, small rocks or does it not matter?? (for the fish i mean?
)
