how do i calcualte how many gallons my tank holds it 36 inches by 18 inches by 12 inches

is it over stocked with 8 swordtails, 4 guppys, 1 pleco, 4 zebra danios and 5 mollies.

also wondering why my swordtails havent bred yet i have them since june and i got my tank second and the swortails came with it, along wit a baby one who was bred in the tank

this site http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/volcalc.html will calculate the volume of many different shapes and sizes of tanks in inches or cm and in us gal or litres

and with regards to breeding the danios.

taken directly from "tankmaster a practical guide to breeding your freshwater fish"

Zebra and Leopard Danios
zebera danios are often recommended as a good fish for novice breeders to spawn. In fact, because the fry are so small, they are more difficult than many other species.
Place a well conditioned pair in the aquarium just before you turn out the lights. Most pairs spawn the following morning. This tends to be a frenetic affair, with the male chasing his mate around at breakneck speed. Eventually, they join in a spawning embrace in which they twist into an S-shape. Non adhesive eggs fall down into the substrate. Remove the adults as soon as they finish spawning. An adult pair can produce up to 400 eggs, which take up to 4 days to hatch.

Sex differences
Although superficially different, zebra and leopard danios are the same species and can be sexed in the same way. Males have an overall golden background colour, while females are more silver. Body shape is also a good indicator, since females tend to be much plumper than males.

Breeding setup
The breeding tank should measure 24x12x12in. The tank should have a temperature of 23-26 C. Cover the base of the tank with large pea gravel or a double layer of glass marbles. Provide several bunches of fine leaved plants and some gentle aeration.

Rearing the fry
The fry may become free-swimming on the seventh day, at which time they need infusoria or a liquid fry food. It may be a week before they are large enough to eat newly hatched brinesrimp, although they can usually tackle microworms after a couple of days. Add a bubble-up sponge filter to the setup in the third week and start 10% water changes at four weeks. The young can reach a length of 2.5cm in only eight weeks.

You tank it just over 30 US gallons. Do you know what type of plec it is? Some get huge.

For a common plec they can grow to around 12" i think, so they need a much bigger tank than 30 gallons, maybe more like 50+ gallons. Do you have any backup plan for if he gets too big? Like a friend or LFS who can take him from you?

ye ash my uncle has a huge tank and only has one 3 spot gurami (spelling) in it so he will have a good home too. how long does it take for a plec to grow to the 12 inch size??? i tink iv molly babies on the way cant wait male is a very dark dalmation wit a greenish tinge and female is a small black molly :good:

I've had my common pleco for a year now, he was about 2 inches SL. (standard length, that means without measuring the tail) He's about 8 inches SL now.
I've read that these fish can grow an inch a month, but I just don't see how. My fish is very well fed, he lives in a large tank, water changes are frequent and large. You should also know that the 'common pleco' could actually be one of several species, depending on exactly which species, he may not stop growing once he reaches a foot!

I've been wondering myself how I'm going to move my pleco if/when he outgrows his 90 gallon. My plan is to recruit assistance from my local aquarium society and/or fish forum. Someone there should know how to help me! I think my biggest problem will be getting a good grip on him...... from the 'bent over into the tank standing on a step stool position!!'

This realy depends on whether a pleco is used to hadling, and its size. Plecos are strong fish, so if you need to move a full grown common you will need a minimum of two people. both should wear gloves, as they can cut you very easily, and will put up a strugle if not used to hadling. get two people and a large box. Half fill the box, catch the pleco's head, and then have the strongest person take the tail. Lift together out of the tank, into the box, then close the lid quickly to calm the plec down. punch holes in the top of the box and ducktap round the edge. for smaller plecs, again use hands to prevent their fins beeing caught in the net. Use a box for any pleco over 4 inches for the same reason you dont want to use a net - fins. Plecos have armor plating on them, with their slime coat under this. This means the hadling a plec is safe, as you don't damage the immune system of the fish buy effecting the slime coat.

I can help with guppies
If possible remove a pair into a seperate tank or buy a breeding net that just hangs over the side of your own tank, he will soon harrass her, leave them there till you see them at it  a few times
Release them back into the tank and watch out for a gravid spot appear on the female
This should tell you the rest
