I had just been applying for a job, so needed to find my N.I.N couldnt find it anywhere, then I look behind my set of drawers and I find the folder I had been looking for had dropped behind the drawer, so I pull out the drawer, take the folder out from behind and I see a bottle of after shave, I take that out, then I go "oh look a lead weight" thinking i must have dropped it, as its dark i take it out into the light, and realise its a dead fish, one of my tetras, no a glowlight as they are all there so must be one of my others. diddnt think any of my fish were jumpers, I took the tank hood off the other day to do maintenence on the lights, must have jumped out then is there anything you guys do to stop them jumping when you take the hood off?

Hopefully there arent anymore behind the tank, as I cant see behind it, as I have my wardrobe one side and my drawers the other.

I don't take the entire hood off until I have already siphoned off some of the water (through the lid opening you use for feeding). When I take the hood off the water level is low enough that they can't jump.

not much you can do if the hood/lid is removed. Just a quick head count and check behind and around the tank each time you do I suppose.

Sorry to hear that mate, not nice.

I have a Lido so the lid lifts in two sections, which is great.. I simply put one section up when water changing, and when i'm filling a bucket i close them both, better safe than sorry... especially as I have hatchets

Yeah, mine is a fluval hood, so I can just open it up, for water changes and stuff, but it must have been the day I had to take the whole hood off, as I was getting the limescale off the lights.

Sorry to hear that. Its tought to lose a fish. I recently lost a flagtail prochilodilis due to him jumping.

That happened to one of my platies/swordtails once. I have lots of plants at the surface of the tank which stops fish jumping and I also rarely take the whole lid off.

I am so sorry

that is one of my greatest fears! ACF are known escape artists so have fitted glass hoods with holes that I cut in for piping and TINY holes cut for fresh air (they are surface breathers)

If you have jumpers put a large piece of cardboard over tank top -makes a great free temp lid. Currently using this as temp replacement till I get new lid on 4ft tank as my proper lid is broken
