I took all the decor out of my tank today and did a thorough cleaning due to an algae problem. I did a water change and then went to the store for some new decor. When I got back I noticed about 20+ fry in the tank ! I may have sucked some of them up not knowing. The female is doing a good job of protecting them and the male is staying at the top of the tank. She is keeping them on bottom of one back corner. I've never had fry and don't know what to do ! I have an Aquaclear HOB filter. Will they get sucked up ? Anything else I should do ???

I have had Juli fry for some time now. They are nearly an inch now. It has been business as usual and they keep out of the way during water changing etc. :good:

Are they on their own ? I have a Frontosa, Calvus, and Brichardi in the tank as well. Did you have to do anything to the filter ? Thanks :)

If the filter has a hole big enough for them to fit then it is likely that they can be sucked in, is it a pipe where the water is getting sucked in or a sponge filter. The best thing to do is get them into another tank by them selves with a heater, sponge filter (can be small) and an airstone for oxygen. However if you want to take the risk of leaving them with their parents then you could do but some parents can eat their own babies if they are too stressed and cannot take care of them. So it is best to get them their own tank so it is easier to feed them. You can feed them baby brine shrimp, dafnia or really fine flake food which you can crush with your hands so it makes it easier for them to eat.
Do you have a spare tank for them?

Good luck and hope you raise them up, I bet its exciting for a first time batch of babies.

Thank you ! I would like to move them, but they are sooooo tiny and the tank is 24" tall. I can't see them from the top with a net. If they make it a bit longer and get big enough to see them, I will move them along with the Momma.

I have some daphnia :)

It is an intake tube on the filter. Will see if I can squeeze a sponge over it or somthing.

Have you had any luck catching them or you still waiting for them to grow. would be a good idea to feed them dafnia as they are really small and they will spread all over the tank so its easier for your fry to catch them and eat properly, they will also grow quicker this way.

I think it would be easier to move the Frontosa. The Calvus is tiny and shy, the Brichardi appears to be guarding the babies. They couldn't be half Brichardi could they  ?

I would move the Frontosa to a tank with some Rainbow dithers and Syndotis. Also, a Blue Acara, and not sure how that would work out. It's the only other tank I have where I could raise the PH and have a chance of it working. The Acara and Front are about the same size.

lol no it won't be, I have one of them but not experienced this, but I have read that these will take care of any fry and will try protect it from other predators. Even when the Brichardi has had their own batch of fry's and then they had another one again in 3 weeks, the first batch of fry will even take care of the second batch :hyper: lol, thats good right. Its just what they do, so now you will have the parents and the brichardi protecting your fry lol but still best to move them to their new home or yeah if easier move the other fish out and you will have more of a chance of saving them :) whats it like how is the brichardi protecting them has the parents decided not to take care of them or has the brichardi stole the babies :look:?
In my opinion its best to just move the babies out as your main fish will just stress out from moving homes. If you cannot catch them then just wait until they get big and also watch all 3 parents lol take care of your fry :p could you possibly take pictures or even send a video of the fry and the parents taking care of them, and maybe the brichardi also taking care of them. Has the brichardi got the whole batch of babies under his care or only a few of them?

Hi Faythee.
They could quite possibly be bichardi crosses, i know because i happened 4 times in my tank! Ive got a breeding pair of Julidochromis ornatus and when they bred the first time i thought my big male birchardi was just helpin out, but as they had 3 more batches and the first got bigger i started to notice that 10% of them looked different. They were! 10% of them were true ornatus, the rest ornatus/birchadi. They are now about 1 to 2 inches and are on sale where i work! lol
I just left the fry in with the 3 parents and they were fine. Birchardis are VERY good gaurdians. And it got the rest of my fish used to having smaller fish around that they're not aloud to eat, great if you want to add any in the future.

Oh right, sorry never new that they could cross breed including with julichromis because they are completely different fish. All I know about them is that they take care of other young babies so it still can be 50/50 chance. Are you sure for definite that you have male and female julichromis?

I didnt know they could cross either! it was a complete surprise to me and ive never heard or read anyone else experiencing it. Faythee's bichardi could stil just be looking after them but it would be very interesting to find someone else who has some Julidochromis/Neolamprologus hybrids.
And yes, im sure for definate that my ornatus are male and female.
Ill change my avatar to a picture of one of the young hybrids, as i dont know how to post pictures

Ok for some strange reason, it wont change my avatar picture, so ive changed my profile picture instead if you want to av a look at it

Oh wow ! This is so interesting :)

The Brichardi is guarding the area of the babies while momma looks after them. The male Regani cannot come anywhere near them. In fact he has to stay up top one corner. The fry have little black spots on them. So far the Frontosa is staying away no problem.

The LFS sold me some powder zooplankton to feed the fry, but it disappears in the water and not sure if they are eating it. I did see them nibbling on some flakes though.

I will try to get video/pics after dark tonight. The zoom on the camera isn't great, so not sure if you will be able to see them.

Just wondering if this will work...
