I have just bought jeyes ammonia all it says is Ammonium Hydroxide will this work for a cycle?

Just spoken to my dad, a chemical analyst working to bring environment poluters to court for their crimes, and he says Ammonium Hyroxide is water in it's soluble state. Basically it's ammonia mixed with water and exactly what you need :good: It's only ammonia in gas form that is the NH3/NH4 we refur to it as on here...

 Is it jeyes kleenoff. shake the bottle if it bubles its no good
Yes, as redevilman says, its important to inspect it carefully. When you shake it, it should behave like plain water... big bubbles that go right away, not any foam. You should also verify that it is completely clear (no colors or cloudiness) and you should carefully (at a distance) smell it. It should have a straight ammonia kick, no fragrance coverup. In UK it will often have an ingredient list telling you it is 5 or 10% ammonium hydroxide I believe, whereas often in USA it might just say "clear ammonia."

Yes, Ammonium Hydroxide = ammonia in water = "aqueous ammonia"... all the same thing.

There is an interesting history to this part of the fishless cycling story I believe. For a while there was some controversy about whether it was better to use Ammonium Chloride or Ammonium Hydroxide, Ammonium Chloride being sold as crystals in bottles usually. There were some who argued that this produced a more "pure" food for the bacteria or was otherwise somehow better. This issue seems long ago dropped and the lore one finds all over is that bottled household ammonia, sold for cleaning purposes, as long as it checks out as having no other additives, is perfectly fine for fishless cycling.
