i just bought a jewel cichlid and i cant tell if its male or female ist about 2" long however it has no red colouring is this just because its young or because its from lfs and was stressed ? any ideas or ideas how to make him/her red?
Not an expert on jewels but I've had 3 young ones for 6 weeks. They were 1-1.5 inches when I got them and they were all silver. They came from a loving home and were well cared for as fry, saw their parents who were a lovely red colour. The largest one has recently started turning pink, the other 2 are still silver. Wouldn't worry, my fish certainly weren't stressed and haven't turned red yet. I think colour change has to do with sexual maturity and they only go bright red when they have a prospective matei just bought a jewel cichlid and i cant tell if its male or female ist about 2" long however it has no red colouring is this just because its young or because its from lfs and was stressed ? any ideas or ideas how to make him/her red?
Can you post a picture? I may be able to sex him/her for you.
It looks like a male to me. I wouldn't suggest keeping the convicts with the jewels, if the convicts pair off, the jewels will be in a world of trouble.
I believe yours to be a Turquoise Jewel. In my opinion, they are even better looking than the regular red jewels. I once had a male turquoise, he was absolutely beautiful. Hew as in breeding colors. I wish I still had him.
Mine became even more "sparkly" as he got older. The outlines of his fins turned yellow.
I'll try and dig out a picture of my old male. It might not be up for a day or two though
About 4 inches big, maybe a bit bigger. I want to try and get 2 more like him, a male and a female and sell the fry at local auctions. He was just stunning. But, he seemed to like breeding. There was a batch of eggs every week( most fish wait every 3 to 4 weeks)
