I get that they are from west africa. What other fish can be kept with them? From my research it seems they are almost like new worlds.

Well, birstle Nose catfish, Kribensis Cichlids. Not much else though, as they can be exremely agressive.

I know mbuna will hand them their tales as well. Thats all the fish their are in the western rivers? I mean that won't get eaten. Appistos maybe?

Nope, apistos are South American and would get killed with the Jewels in there.

Hemichromis, Steatocranus, Tilapia, Synodontis, Polypterus, Distichodus, "Cichlasoma," Pimelodids, Loricarids (Plecos).

Thats what I got after searching for companions. I am planning to house htem in a 55 allon US, so that cuts a lot them out. I have no clue why it includes a jack dempsy.

Depends on the Tilapia species - avoid Buttikoferi, lovely fish but generally highly aggressive and most aquarists end up keeping them alone, either by choice or by accident

I've kept mature jewels with mature firemouths, although only temporarily (I kept the jewels for a friend for a few months). They got along fine aside from the occasional skirmish, but YMMV as cichlids come with very different personalities within the same species. But mixing west africans with new world cichlids is always a bit risky because they have different body languages and don't always understand each others' dominance/submission signals.

I've seen people try mixing jewels with convicts, based on the reasoning that both are aggressive fish that can hold their own. This is not a good idea, as these two species will fight violently and potentially cause serious harm to both parties (and in the end the convicts will dominate).

My sister gave me her fish because she couldn't have them where she moved to. She had a young Jack Dempsey female in a 10 gallon with a Jewel. I immediately gave them their own 10 gallon when she gave them to me.. but she said that they never harrassed each other.
I am currently trying to find homes for both of them. I have a post in the buy/sell/trade section if you're interested. There is a link to it in my signature.

Thats the one I was looking at. But the joka also looks quite nice. I'm still checking for more types.

do you have a pic of the jewel?

I don't, actually. I don't even own a camera yet. :( I just started a new job. Once I get my first paycheck, I was planning on buying a camera. Then I'll post some pictures. It's still a young Jewel.
