Jewel Breeding

i have two jewel cichlids, one has a hump on his head one dosent.

prety sure i have a male and female.

my tank is heavily planted and has driftwood caves but they havent bred!!
they turn dark red with the jewel markings on them when trhey are together. then the one with the lump chases the other away.

how can i get them 2 breed???

You can lower the temp a little for two weeks.

During this two week time, do not do any water changes.

Than, at the end of the two weeks, raise the temperature a little higher than you had it before you lowered it, do a large, 50% water change, which will simulate a rain fall and what not.

That should trigger something to happen.

Also, during the two week period, have you water level a little lower so that the water coming back into your tank from your filter will splash more, like a water fall, which will also simulate rain fall and what not.

........thats going to put me backwards on algea but oaky...

Got a pic of the fish? I can sex them for you. Sometimes it can take for ever for them to breed. But once mine started, they bred once a week.

Yes, she can incubate the fry in her mouth for a while if danger is present.

The mother and father are very good protectors of their young.

Im gonna try and straighten this up. They are not mouth brooders. Atleast, mine always layed on rocks. And then they would take it from there. Yours both appear to be male. Here is a video my old pair. You can clearly tell the difference in male and female:

ok, yours dont seem to have the hump....should i be worried about mine? i thought that meant it was a boy?

the other dosent have a hump and dosent turn bright red as much

The male had a very indistinct hump. But that is NOT a reliable way to sex cichlids. Male will be very vibrantly colored( usually longer fins) and females will have a rounder stomach and it will be a lighter, almost see through kinda red. The hump I believe is just a cavaity that cichlids can get as they age.

Looks male to me, but u red better pics to tell for sure.
