Just got the tank and it's great but does the internal filter come out for cleaning?

Cheers

I am assuming that you have the filter fixed on the right hand side. If so you will 2 plastic baskets inside which hold the various sponges required. If you like I can let you know which ones you need & the order they go in.

Hi Specks

We've got all the baskets and filter media i was just wondering if the whole unit came out?

Sorry Shell I misunderstood. No it is a fixture. Unpacked ours this morning & it was all in place. Its a neat idea having the heater tucked in there as well. All set up now & looking good, Im really pleased with it. Cant wait to get the fish. Wish you loads of fun & pleasure with yours.

One thing i'd say about the Juwel filters is this....when doing maintenance, every now and then, I remove the sponges and syphon out the water directly from inside the black box. It's amazing how filthy it get's in there, and this isn't removed when doing a normal water change. I have planted Tank and there's always dead leaves and other stuff inside it.

the whole unit can come out, people on this forum have mentioned it before, but i think by means of butchery. either trying to slice sealant that holds it on or by actually breaking the plastic box for permanant removal.
ive a rio 240 but have left the box, so do you want to permently remove it?

According to Juwel the deposit at the bottom of the filter housing should be left as its a biological substance & will enhance the water quality. Am used to a Fluval filter myself which can be removed for cleaning. ( I have always cleaned any deposits in the casing - maybe I shouldt have!!??!! )

nah that a load of rubbish quite literally.

in the long term you can get nitrate problems from build up of crap in there.

you also need to syphon out the slots the pump and hilter go in.

I have, for a while, removed the dirty stuff. And as of yet haven't noticed a problem. Perhaps someone else knows for definite eh??

i have two juwel tanks

one is a 180 and i left the internal filter in

the other is a 350 and i took the internal out and use an external filter on that. had to slice the silicone that was holding it in place to get it out.

not sure if thats what you mean or do you mean just to clean it?

Thanks for that Paul & KentBlokey, in view of what you have both said I will make sure I clean out the residue. As I said we always clean out the casing of my sons Fluvel filter. Have not had many probs with his tank.

Its only double sided sticky pads that hold it in. I took mine out cause they suck! I now have an external filter and my tanks never been so good!!!
I read that you should leave the stuff in the bottom, said it in the Juwel book. Only had mine in there for a few months so never did it.

hi guys

thanks for the replies, i just meant for cleaning the around the filter so i'll leave it in i thought that there mnight of been a way to just unhook it to clean the glass behind it and then place it back but if it's siliconed in, i'll just leave it!

we've got it posistioned, and filled, fiance set about it last night when we got it back, must have been on with it till about 1 in the morning, but it's worth it, i'll post some pics soon - it's not even finished and he has done a great job - it's fantastic!!

Juwel are very good - I have two of their tanks but I would recommend cleaning the bottom of the black filter box out every now and then too. I do mine when in moving the filter baskets up and down to change/clean them shows the water that puffs out of the 'water out' hole is full of crap.

I dont agree with others that the Juwel filter is crap - its all I've ever used and it works a dream for me. Those sponges are HUGE in terms of capacity. Normal rules apply though, dont overstock. Says me

Oh, you shouldn't ever have to clean the glass behind the box. Also if there is a gap underneath the filter i.e. between the bottom of the black box and the glass bottom of the tank you can iether fill this with gravel to stop fish going under there or let them go under but remember to get your arm in every now and then and scoop out everything under there to clean it. Gravel cleaners dont fit and the open end of the syphon tube will fill with the sand or gravel. Loads of fish do like to use it as a refuge and a 'quiet' zone so I've always left mine open.

I've never really had any trouble either, and the Juwel filters have like the largest filer media surface area around apparently!
