In a standard AllGlass-style 55g tank, what kind of tankmates could go with a JD? I have heard plecs, RTBS, rosy barbs, certain eels (wondering if a peacock eel would work), australian rainbowfish, etc.
I am thinking I could get a small (2" or so) JD along with the tankmates together, preferably with with tankmates being larger from the beginning.
Would this work?

I would really stick to the larger bottom feeders with the JD, or other south american cichlids that could hold their own

a RTB or a shoal of Barbs may work but i wouldn't suggest it, when the JD matures its temperament may totally change.

i have a severum and 2 hoplos in with my jd. he's a blue jd so it's a bit smaller and less aggressive. it's over stocked a bit but i work on it constantly and i have a lot of filtration.

oh and it's in the standard 55 all-glass.

You probably could go with a school of large barbs.. Rosy barbs might be a little small..

There are a couple different cichlids that could possibly work too. Festivum, severum, rainbow, and probably a few other cichlids with similar temperment.

My guy is spoiled and has always wanted to be by himself. I've kept a few other cichlid species with him, even a couple females to try and see if he is interested but he just wants to be a hermit.... so right now, his tank mates are a plec who he nips at every once in a while, 6 giant danios, and 6 black khuli's... and yes, I'm suprised he hasn't already eaten them, but I think he is more afraid of them than they are of him... they swim all around him and he just freezes like a wouse...
