Jd Question...

I have a Male JD(6") and 3 days ago I thought I bought a Female(?) JD(5"), but I am really not sure... I have read a few posts already and other than venting am confused... well maybe not confused, but unsure!
Of course the fish store clerk said it was a female... I didn't see an anal pore (Male, anal pore. Female, no anal pore. Right?) The Female does not have real pointed dorsal fins, but has red tipping on them... I have read both the red tipping is and is not a sign of a Male???
And as far as aggresion... these two(2) were sparing pretty hard for the first day together... as of now, the Female(?) is either hiding or making mad dashes around the tank...

I'm sure there is an easy answer...

It ain't easy simply matching up a male and a female, especially as they grow larger. Even if they could possibly end up as mates the male will likely kill the female before it ever happens.

Put a divider in the tank and let them get used to each other through it. Hopefully they'll work something out between them and you'll be able to tell by their behavior toward each other through it.

I've got a male 5'' and female 4'' in a 75g tank with some other cichlids, and they get along quite well... the male occassionally chases the female around, but never hurts her... My female does have the red tip on the dorsal fin.. I also have a 1'' ''unsexable'' JD in there also and it has never been touched....

The first few days were a little weird when I introduced the female.. lots of flaring, no lip locking or real sparring.... just flaring and running away.. hopefully your 2 will work out, but be sure to keep an eye on them!

As for sexing them, I just look at the blue on the face.

I plan on getting a tank divider today... I'll probably give it a few days, but I am setting up another tank. I wanted to put some Blood Jeweled Cichlids in the new tank...

My camera is not taking a charge, but I should have some pics of the two(2) JD's soon...
