So I've decided I want a moss wall to cover my horrid blue background (painted on the glass, so can't just change it). Going to build it similarly to this journal I think. Reading up on the topic, I keep noticing that people tend to choose mosses that are not Java moss, whereas I only have access to tons of cheap Java moss. Any other moss I would need to order online, and in my current financial situation I'd like to save every possible cent. In general I dislike ordering online anyway, as I want to see the condition of the plants I'm buying.

What would be the main drawbacks of using Java moss? I've kept a lot of it in my cichlid tanks and noticed it tends to grow kind of loose and "fluffy" but I'm not sure if that's just because the cichlids kept disturbing the moss all the time. Would it work in a moss wall (I don't mind pruning and cleaning it often) or should I just get a more suitable species?

Aesthetics. Java isn't used as much as other types simply because it doesn't look anywhere near as good.It would still work but not to the same degree as Weeping moss for example.
It's all down to personal opinion though.

Mmkay I think I'm going with java moss then. The back wall is mostly obscured by plants so the moss wall doesn't have to look fantastic as long as it's, well, mossy.

Check out the beginning of my Dutch journal. I go into detail on how I constructed a moss wall. It is huge now and the top needs a trim badly. I used weeping moss. Everything really needs a trim in this tank.

It's in the first page of posts.

Yeah I'm already using your journal as a guide. :) The divider I have is smooth on both sides, but I guess I can use sandpaper to make the surface rough enough for the moss.
