Is it okay to plant one's java fern in the gravel or should it be attached to something? I thought it could be grown either way, but just read something somewhere that said "don't plant it!"

You need to attach it to something, Bogwood ... a rock etc.

Fishing line or cotton works well ... as do elastic bands :)

You can also go with super glue, I've tried it and it works great.. aesthetically pleasing too because its invisible. If left in a tank with little flow, it will eventually attach to gravel..is what most sites say. But the best thing to do will be to attach it manually instead of waiting for it to attach itself, which may be never in a tank with a lot of water movement.

It can be grown either way as long as the rhizome isn't covered. It will, however, grow better attached to wood or rock.
