I'm really confused about my java fern right now. About a week ago, I bought some java fern from my LFS. When I looked at the underside of the leaves, I saw these brown lumps about 1mm or so in diameter. I assumed they were snail eggs and proceeded to scrape them off with my fingernails and rinsing the leaves, or removing the leaves if there simply too many to remove manually.

Now I was just at plantgeek.net looking at pics of java fern and there are a few pictures showing the underside of the leaves and there were the exact brown lumps that were on my java fern. The description of the picture said they were spores.

Can anybody tell me what they really are?

Here's the pic they have on the plankgeek.net site.

I've read somewhere that this is normal, its trying to grow roots.

It's a common mistake to belive its a illness or something, but its actually a good thing.
