Hey Guys,

I have 5 Java Ferns that i bought from my LFS, In one of my topics, I was told that I should remove the foam and led from the bottom, I was expecting to find a rhizome? but all they are, are just stems, so I cant attatch it to wood, is this normal? will it be okay if I just plant all of the stems into my sand individually. At the moment they are getting along fine, lots of new growth on top.

well i just stuck mine into the sand, and they havent died yet! in fact, one has been uprooted by a cory, and is happily just sitting next to the bogwood!

The java fern normally doesn't have such a big rhizome as anubias. I stick my java fern into crevices on the wood, but the best method used here on the forum is superglue. You can then glue it to rockes, wood, whatever...

And if the roots get big enough, you can use fishing line to tie it down to something.

I just wedge them into crevices as Biulu says, providing its wedged in well enough the roots will clamp on given time. I find fishing line so tedious and ahard to tie i've given up with it.

Fluffycabbage- Have you buried the rhyzome? If so get it out, or atleast pull the rhyzome above the substrate level, else it WILL rot. If you've managed to plant the delicate roots without burying the rhyzome and/or breaking the roots i take my hat off to you, i find it near impossible haha.

it was just a cutting, so had all the delicate roots. i looked at them today (there are 3 cuttings), and all their roots are growing in the sand very well! :good:

Good good, so long as the rhyzome itself isnt buried your ok :)

Well, for me so far its fine to bury the rhizome, at the moment I have the Rhizomes buried, and today I noticed some new growth that had pushed up THROUGH the sand bed :)

its not fine to bury the rhizome, give it 4 weeks and you java fern will be on deaths door.

This is one of those old saying but in this case it is one that is basically true.

You don't bury rhizomes because they can rot quite easily when buried. Not always. I have some that have 'buried theirselves' but very often they do rot and then you just have a load of mush to clean up.

Its been about 6 weeks. All is well so far, I'll wait and see. Its just, imo, a large plant like java fern looks stupid attatched to something, and for saying I have 6,I dont really have anything to attatch it too. :good:

I know its rather old post but i was just reading through. I attached my java fern to a rock, which was then buried under the substrate with the rhizome kept above ;) kept it in place, and youd never know it was attached to anything!
