Jamacian Blue Guppies

Hi Guys - Brain picking for you BLA Guys & others who may be able to help.

I've got myself a nice group of Jamacian Blue Guppies off Nigel (Ricefish)but they are mostly males - Anyway.

I've tried to do a bit of research on them & found nothing on the Web, but I dropped an email to Tim Addis who told me that he believes they are a distinct species / variety to that of the Japaneese Blue, were found by an editor of PFK & currently a rarerity within the BLA & on another site I read that they were the same species / variety.

OK - My question:

Are they the same or different?

Is anyone (outside of Ricefish) keeping them & if so what's your experience?

I've put a wanted add for more females on here & aquarist classifieds - How can you tell the difference between Jamacian & Japaneese females if I get offered any?

Does anyone know of anyone / where selling them?

I have three males of these. My LFS have a stock of them in (http/www.tynevalleyaquatics.co.uk/) and you can order them in there or they can post them out - they only sell them in pairs on their website but you can contact them to order some in - it's about £4 per fish. I was planning on getting some females. Well two of my males are fit as a fiddle it would seem; the third one doesn't seem so well - I separated him yesterday.

I also found lack of information on the internet about these. I posted lots of questions on here - if you search for me in this forum you'll find some information.

Helterskelter on here keeps them and he has given me lots of advice .

Jamacian and Japanese are different species; one has a shoulder spot and the other doesn't (in the males) but as to which way around it is I don't know.

They are one species, along with all other guppies, just like all dogs are dogs. The color and fin strains of guppies are interesting but that does not make them a separate species. I would guess that you have a specifically bred strain that has been given a name by the breeder. If you keep them separate from other guppies, you should be able to maintain the strain in a relatively unchanged appearance fopr generations to come.

i have a group of featherfin jap blue guppies, half have the elongated finns half dont, do any of yours have the long finnage. di

I didn't mean species, I meant strain as old man corrected.

What I mean was they weren't the same fish, they were different strains.

If I can't get other jamacian Blue females what's my options to keep this strain going?

Jamaican Blue is a strain of guppy, and is different from japanese blues and most other guppies.

However they will just as easily breed with any guppy females, however this would result in a mixed bag of colours in the fry.
Ricefish is the best option here and see if he can find any more females in his jam packed fish room

You could cross with japanese blue's which i have and you should have much the same i would suspect but you could no longer call then True Jamaicans.
