Jam Jars Replicate Their Natural Enviroment

kev350d I would personally go challenge the person who put up the sign, asking where the actual evidence is to back it up. Start a big rant and don't stop, tell them you will start putting signs up around the shop telling people not to buy pets from their because they mistreat the animals. Tell them you will be outside the door when you can making sure people won't take this information seriously and think jam jars are better then their natural environment!

He does care, but he has a family to feed. Not very high pay picketing fish shops
But i like your idea jus see kev in his kilt blowing his bagpipes (jus jokin mate :) ) at shoppers

Haha yeah I think you should just tell him that to scare him :p

What do you think the owner would say to this? Did you know most people think betta fish only live for about 3 months before naturally dying? I think it's because people don't like to make daily water changes! I have a fish that's 3 years old and I've only had to change its water once every week or two and he's still healthy. That's because I keep him in a 1 gallon tank. Point out that it's still small enough to fit on a desk or in a child's room yet it's easier to maintain and is therefor nicer for the fish. Plus, the owner can make more money selling the tank then the fish! People like buying accessories to decorate them too.

My LFS dosent tell you anything like that. But they do mix them in with other fish. Once i got there when they had a shipment in and they put a male into a tank of female guppies. They started nipping him. About 3 mins later i brought him. He died a while ago tho. Its ok as a temp thing in a shop but such, false info is stupid. Make me feel, in this order :-( :shout: :grr:

Do you have the Discovery Channel in the UK? They have a series called "Myth Busters" and I think this one deserves a spot in it.... I wonder how a person would go about nominating a subject?

we do get mythbusters. I dont see experimenting with life animals as being very ethical for the show!

ummmm..... it might not have to......like taking a trip to their native countries and show the audience how they really live.... Think that might bust the myth?? This was a really helpful suggestion if you think these things thru a bit....

you clearly havent seen how they are bred over the asia then! The are kept in jam jar size pots until they are transported!

Ok-allow me to spell out what I meant by my remark. I personally have also heard petshop keepers making the claim that betta enjoy living in little jars as that is their environment in the wild...meaning that is how they live outside, not in manmade situations... not in kept situations after they are captured or when they are bred. This would be if a person were to go out in a field some place looking for them...how would they be living? in a little hole in the ground 4 inches by 4 inches?

So, therefore, Mythbusters might take a crew over to southeast Asia and find some living in the wild to see if it's true that they live in little holes in the ground or not disproving what pet store owners claim. Maybe they'd film you at the same time if you want to get in on this if you'd stand off in the distance and wave and hold up a sign maybe?? saying
"you clearly havent seen how they are bred over the asia then! The are kept in jam jar size pots until they are transported!"
but then it wouldn't have much bearing upon the argument since it has nothing to do with it. K? k.

Signing off here having tried to make my point. Merry and Warm Christmas Season to All. :D

mythbusters dont do that sort of myths thats my point. But I know what you are trying to say. Luckily its not quite so common to get them in the jars over here.

Unless it involved exploding bettas, i think you're right.

I'd like to see them dispell the myth that pet stores give adequate advice to customers regarding animal husbandry, and care more about the animals they're selling than making a profit. Should be a REALLY easy one to bust, especially with stores like this one around. <_<
