Hi Everyone,

I have just got myself six baby Jack Dempsey's (to get a pair) for the first time, after having Malawi Cichlids for the last few years and I fancied a change.
The guy that we saw at the store was really helpfull, does anyone out there have any tips or advice for me as I have gone on lost of websites, found lots of info. Different websites state different things and am abit confused at the moment!

All info will be greatfully recieved especially if anyone can tell me the signs that they are starting to 'pair off' etc.

Cheers

the surest signs that you have a pair in the tank is that you will see the female stake out an area of the tank and the male will activly patrol the area around the female, the other fish will also take a huge pounding as the pair defend their territory. as far as courtship is concerned more than likely there will be some jaw locking, and possibly some torn fins but it shouldn't be too rough on the pair.

a quick way to tell if they are pairing off is when you see the other fish hiding in the corner half chewed up. One pr will be swimming around the tank happily and everyone else is terrified. When that happens you will have to remove the other fish to prevent them being killed. Then you have a pr in a tank and soon after that you have a pr and a 1000 babies in the tank :)
