hey guys. i just lost an oscar, my jack dempseys kept going for its eyes i believe. when i checked this morning my oscar was dead without eyes :( he was only about 2 half inches and my 3 jack dempseys are about 3 inches.

the oscar was so bubbly and nice.

Oscars can throw their weight around but are complete wimps underneath. The JD, being larger would definitely have the upper hand and oscars are easily bullied so I'm not surprised at all.

Sorry for your loss.

i agree, oscars are not tough at all, they can throw their weight around and usually depend on their size to get them out of trouble, not usually a good ideas to keep them with "agressive" fish

What size tank were the 3 Jd's and oscar in?

sorry for your loss

do you think a larger oscar would be okay with them? my tank is a juwel vision 260

Ha Ha!

..I'm allowed to laugh since I gave them to you. :p

No. A 260ltr tank is too small for JDs and oscars IMO. If you were to have an oscar in there, I wouldn't have any tankmates personally.. especially cichlids. There's just not enough area for territories in that space.

Def way too small. This tank is just big enough for one adult jd by itself... so you were just asking for this to happen. Now that the o is gone watch for a jd to show up dead as they will begin to turn on eachother

at 3 inches each i don't think the tank is too small yet at all 121L x 62H x 46W cm seems quite a good size for them right now imo. nothing is permanent, and perhaps i will sell my other 2 jd's or get a bigger tank. unless ofcourse you can confirm that the fishes will grow to a maximum size in 1 day. if i had 4 jd's then i don't think that they would attack each other. i guess it's because the oscar is more slower and gentle. so no i wasn't asking for it.

People forget that with cichlids, it's not just about wether they physically fit into the tank, it's also about space for territories. They're exceedingly territorial and need the ground space and decor to "split" the tank. A 3" JD may only be small but that doesn't mean it's territory is or that as it grows, it won't change.

Even at 3", I personally wouldn't try 3 JDs and an oscar in a 65.. I agree with ox5477, it definitely was asking for trouble.

If you measurements are correct then it is around 345 liter tank. If it is then you would be fine with a pair of jds and even a couple others. But I would not add in oscar, they are puppies compared to the jds, at any size they wouldn't last long. And if you get a pair and they decide to breed they only get meaner.

Edit: Am I missing something 121L x 62H x 46W cm comes to 345 liters, RIGHT?

Yes, I get 345 liters as well. so either your measurements are wrong or you don't have a 260. In a 345, you could maybe keep two jds or one o and a jd.

And another thing, obv, they are small right now, but why would you buy fish that barely fit in a tank now? This is a classic mistake that most first time fish keepers make, (I did myself when I first started) If you think they will grow in a smaller tank and live a happy life and just get bigger like normal, no, they won't. you will hurt the fish in the long run, both from the size of the tank and from prob one or two of them getting killed due to aggression. If you don't like to hear the truth and want to do what you "think" is fine, then don't post on TFF. we are here to help others and give them clues to problems and reasons for things happening, if you dont want us to be honest, then this is not the forum for you....

i'm happy for people to give me their advice and opinions, but that doesn't mean i have to always agree with what everyone has to say. those are the measurements on the offical website and its a juwel vision 260. the truth is that the future hasn't happened yet and maybe i will pass on the other fishes. i may buy a larger tank. i'm talking about the present and right now the jd's are happy. the water is good, they are not dark or showing aggresson towards each other. yes they may kill each other one day, but whose to say i will still have them at that stage. they havent shown much aggression to each other yet until i added in the oscar. a person being honest may not be right. the truth is that the jd's are perfectly fine amongst themselves. unfortunately the oscar was killed and i have learnt from my mistake.

I am always confused when people ask for advise then get offended when they don't get the answer they want  . It will not matter soon anyway, a breeding pair of jds will take over all but the biggest tank. They will decide for you who stays and who needs to go. Jds are one of my fav. cichlids, the males are absolutely beautiful, I have a pair myself. If I was you I would wait until I had a pair then trade in the others and get a pair of firemouths and maybe some dithers. If you tank is 345 liters you would have plenty of room. anyway good luck and hope things work out for you :good:

edit: just found out you do have a 260L tank, you would still have room for all the fish l listed IMHO

Jack Dempseys are called this for a reason, look up the boxer their named after. They are one of the meanest cichlids i've ever come across. You should not put even a 14 inch oscar with those things. I had one once with an oscar and finally had to get rid of teh dempsey because it wouldn't stop attacking teh oscar, especially the caudal fin.
