Please people, post only when you know what your talking about. They are not "mean." They are animals and they have natural instincts. If you put them in a medium sized to small tank with another species of cichlid (or even another of its own species), of course violence will erupt because it is their nature to defend territory to survive. Some fish are a bit more timid than others and can be kept with other cichlids, but the majority still have the strong instinct to defend what they believe to be theirs. My JD is a timid little guy that cowers sometimes even to my pleco, but when it comes to other cichlids, he takes no sh*t and will not leave other cichlids alone, it is just natural. If you don't know how to stock a tank for a fish that has this natural behavior (that you can not and will not be able to change), then walk two aisles over in the LFS and buy some guppies instead.....

Wow, your gonna insult and start an argument with these other posters over semantics?? Mean=Naturally agressive, use a little common sense, it dosent take a rocket scientist to realise that the original posters intent was not to suggest that this fish was evil but infact does have a nasty temperment. Geeze.

Oh I'm sorry there. Its not mean, just misunderstood right. They are hostile towards otehr large cichlids and has the tendency to kill anything it deems a threat to its little hole or territory. Which means, don't mix it with other large cichlids.
