Jack Dempsey Tankmates

I have a 55gal tank that now houses a 2month old Jd along with a 3yr old pleco and a 2month old brown knifefish. I am looking to add some color to the tank. What would make a good mate for these guys? I have been told many things at different pet stores but they are just trying to sell product. I am thinking about Red Devil cichlid or oscar cichlid. Should i introduce 2 at a time? I need advise, and quick...thanks.

are you plannig to upgrade in the near future...oscars need around a 75gallon tank<minimum alone......

i would...oscars get enormous. Red Devils get pretty large too. have you looked at severums? the gold ones are nice so are the red-headed ones, called rotkeil. they don't get too large.

I would go with a severum.. Red devils and Oscars both get too large..

A severum would probably be the safest bet.

I tried the severum, he almost killed it in 1/2 hour, I then tried 2 red devils and he killed one in 4 hrs and the other is hiding.

The problem is, your jd has now claimed the tank as his own. Any cichlid you introduce to the tank will be beaten into submission, and in most cases, to death.

I have the same problem with my cichlid tanks. I cant add any new fish as there is already a dominant cichlid in the tank.

I was told maybe a pictus catfish or some sort of bottom dweller. He seems to leave the pleco alone and the knife fish alone. We just wanted to add some color. JD is the nastiest fish i have ever seen. Maybe he needs some ridilin?
