Can i put one male jack dempsey in a 55gal (4ft) tank with a medusa plec (grows to 8inches) or could the plec get picked on.

I am filtering the tank with a fluval 305, should i add more filtration too cope with there waste?

thanks

jd

Those two fish should get along, and I don't know how powerful a fluval 305 is, but I think a 55g should have a filter that can at least pump 300gph (Less for a canister). Your are planning on stocking this tank lightly though (Compared to what I do to 55g tanks), so that shouldn't be a problem :)

my JD killed a 9 inch common pleco. but I suppose with enough small spaces that only the plec could get in should get along fine

Get a pleco that's larger then the Jd you get.

I personally wouldn't count on that formula. it all depends on the personality of the fish. the common pelc that I speak of in my other post was raised with a group of RBPs and wouldn't take anything from them if they got close a quick swipe of its pectoral fins was enough to get them out of the way but with the JD he just took his time and picked his oppertunity. one night everything was just peachy next morning the pelc was belly up.

Well s/he's got a better shot buying a 2'' JD and a 5-6'' pleco then going with a 6'' JD and a 2'' pleco. That's basically what I was trying to say.

no, i have my heart set on a cichlid though.
The tank is ready for fish and want to get them in a few weeks.

what would you think best as a replecement.

pretty much have my heart set on a jd though

cheers

JD's are extremely aggressive and strong and putting anything with it is a risk. If your heart is set on the JD then a single 'wet pet' is the best alternative.

do they have a really good personality?

Do you think i could put a medusa plec in there? Or would it be best just the jd on his own?

If i get a juvinile how long do they take to get to full size?

thanks

A blue acara or Geophagus brasiliensis would be more tolerant of a tankmate. Pity you aren't closer, I've got a spare male geo juvie.

the tank i will be housing my jd in is a fluval duodeep 1200, should i put books (something heavy on top) when he's older to make sure he doesn't hit the lid open/off?

so if i put a juvi jd in and a 5" medusa plec they would be alright for a while but i might have to take the plec out when the jd is older, does that sound right??

jd

That could be a possibility.. I had a 6'' JD that was mean to all the other fish except the pleco. It didn't see the pleco as competition so it didn't worry about bullying it around.

Chances are if you buy a small JD and a decent sized oscar, they will get along.

 i thought uk and us gallonage went backwards from your signature? i always thought if you had 20 us gallons it meant you had more than 20 (not sure what) uk gallons?
