Doesnt seem to matter what I do with my plants, I dont have much luck.

Ive only got Java Ferns (lots of it), vallis and hygro polysperma in the tank now, dosing with easy carbo 10ml daily and tpn+ 7.5-10ml daily, 400L tank, but the java fern especially is covered in brown spots/specks, which isnt algae and it looks horrid, plus lots of holes (some of which is down to the Severums) but it also has lots of babies coming from it. The vallis doesnt seem to grow much nor the polysperma, its just there, looking sad for itself. 8hrs light a day, 2 x 54W T5's. Also problems with hair algae, which is probably down to low flow, currently only running the juwel internal, as the EX1200 is now on rio 180 and eheim 2217 out of commision due to have a new filter head Monday and that creates loads of flow so hoping the hair stuff goes away.

Cant do co2, thats why the easy carbo, so apart from what Im already dosing, which is expensive, what else can I do? Im at the stage of take it all out, throw it away and leave with no plants or go back to silks (which I dont like).

I know how you feel  , I gave up with plants years ago, But i decided 2 months ago to try again, and touch wood the plants are the best i've ever had :D . I got a vision 260 standard filter, t5's on 7 hours a day, not using co2, I'm using tetra plantamin for ponds (works out cheaper) And API root tabs. My java fern wasn't doing very well so i moved it to my other tank Which has less light and it seems happier in there.

i would get a powerhead in there, like koralia 1-2. and the brown spots on java fern is the new plantlets growing, you can avoid this look by positioning them so that you see the front of the leaf not the back, plus you need to do weekly water changes of 50%, this helps maintain minerals..... can you explain what the leaves look like, are they brittle, yellow?,

I would probably just wait. How long has it been since you started implementing fertilisation?

If the Java fern is quite new, it could be emmersed leaves not doing too well. Usually they can adapt, but sometimes it can take a while for me to get Java fern to look good. Jist keep cutting off laves that look really bad. The plantlets should fare better than the mother plant, if you can tie them onto something.

Valis is pretty touchy for me, and it took a long time for me to get started well with it too, Id suspect that has something to do with my soft acidic water though.

H.polysperma is a mystery though, that stuff is crazy .

No the brown isnt the new plantlets, they leaves are turning brown in patches. I do 2 x 50% w/c weekly as I have rainbows in the tank. Leaves are otherwise a nice green colour.

Ferts have been added since end of January, all plants been in about two weeks before that. The baby plants do look better, but even they are starting to turn the brown colour particularly round the edges.

I have experienced as above really. Valis took ages but took off eventually and now some leaves are about 60 cm long  . My swords I thought were in stasis not doing anything and developing brown spots but have also shot along now. I think they were waiting for fish poo fertilization, as these sort of plants rely on rich substrate and I only have plain gravel. They also seem to be sending a shoot toward the surface so not sure if it is a propagation or flower shoot

Do you know your GH? I live in a very soft water area (water from Thirlmere) so Magnesium and Calcium levels are very low so I have recently started dosing Seachems GH booster (easy to make) and hopefully will see healthy plants :good:

No idea on gh/kh, ph is 7.8 and to my knowledge a fairly hard water area.
